I have a formatting question that I just can't seem to intuitively figure out. I'm using Office 2007 and I'm formatting my dissertation. My question is regarding page numbering.

There is a title page and two pages afterwards that contain certifications of approval. These are to have no page numbers.

This is followed by an abstract, dedication, acknowledgments, a list of tables, and then a table of contents. These are to be lower case, Roman numerals at the bottom center of the page.

Then, the main text of the dissertation begins with Chapter I, page one. These should be numbered with Arabic numerals at the top right-hand corner.

I just can't get this format to work. It always wants to start on page one of the document and I can't find a setting to change that. And when I try and change the formatting after the beginning Roman numerals, it changes everything. Now, I can create three separate docs with separate formats for printing, but I need a main, formatted, electronic version to email to a committee member.

Anybody know how to do this?

You need to insert a section break just before the place where you want the page numbering to start. Check the help in Word for section breaks and how to format page numbers for just one section.

This.

Word allows for a different page one, but you'll need a section break for anything more elaborate.

Previous posts are correct. You must use section breaks. Some like to use no number on title page, lower case roman numerals for toc etc., and Section-pageno for remaining sections, and Appendix letter-pageno for appendices. This can all be accomplished with section breaks and if necessary, forced page breaks (ctl-enter). Be sure to check the configuration in the header or footer as well as you may not always want the "same as previous" designation.

No problem with the suggestions so far, but here is one more bit of advice: If those tricks don't solve the problem right away, don't worry about it until after your defense. Your readers won't care how the pages are numbered, and you've got bigger fish to fry.

When I wrote my dissertation, I couldn't get my word processor to number the pages properly, so I simply numbered the pages of my manuscript by hand with a pencil and took it to the copy shop.
