Midwest Storm Damage: Anyone been hit?

Sign in to disble this ad
Yesterday we had a bad storm here and several heavy branches fell on my house. One tore the ventilator apparatus over the laundry room off the roof. The damage will likely been too little for the deductible or else I will still have to pay a big chunk of the final bill. I can't say I wish it were worse so I wouldn't have to pay up, but I sure hate to see what was spare cash get gobled up!

Moved both cars about ten minutes before branches fell that would have hit the Kitty Cat car (Jag.) Black Locust trees do look pretty when they flower, but once they reach a certain size they get rotten branches that usually prune themselves during storms about once a year. Nothing too bad though just some cleanup to do.

Clean filters and a new spark plug got the 35 year old chainsaw running.

Chainsaw = Fun

I was out of town overnight, and I found a huge branch in my driveway. If it had hit the house, I would have had roof damage for sure. I know it is gonna run into the thousands, but I have got to get the trees seriously cut down around my house.

Tornado touchdown less than a mile from my house. Luckily not a scratch here. It came so quick that the sirens didn't go off until the tornado was well gone.

You might get lucky with the insurance company. I had ice damage (gutters) and wind damage (aluminum awnings) in both cases the insurance company waved the deductible if I would use their contractor. And the replacement work was fine. homeowners policies are usually a lot better then car insurance for that kind of stuff.

We had some big storms north of me this evening, and about the northern third of my county is without power. Lots of wind damage, but no apparent loss of life. We had winds as high as 80 mph, but no Tornados.

We had tornado warnings Friday night which ended up making us quit a gig half way through, but we ended up getting nothing but a sprinkle.

Most of the bad stuff us here us. As much as I loathe hot weather, it always spawns interesting weather, which rules. (unless it affects you).

We drove though a Tornado back in early April, which we didn't know about until after the fact. I don't think I remember this kind of weather this early in the year back when I was a kid.

Central Indiana got hit extremely hard. Most of Franklin (south of Indy) was flooded waist deep, with quite a few areas flooded as high as 7 or 8 feet. I have a few friends whose houses were destroyed by water. A few lost their cars. They were carried away by the fast moving water.

A watched a tornado form right over my head, which included copious amounts of hail battering cars in the parking lot I was next to.

It rained like hell all weekend long. They say there's more on the way today. Friday night wasn't too bad for attendance at the bar, but Saturday got off to a slow start. There was some street flooding that made the drive home after the gig on Saturday fun, but no damage at my house. So far......

Southwest Omaha, or the 'Millard' area as it's called got some EF-2 level tornado damage that knocked the roofs off of a few houses, knocked down trees, and other mayhem early Sunday morning. Thankfully the tornado didn't cut as heavy of a devastation path that could have happened. No one got killed and I haven't heard of any serious injuries thank goodness. I live in the northwest section of Omaha and all we got was some very heavy rain. My thoughts and prayers are with those around the country who have been hit hard by this surprisingly violent storm season as of late.

We're getting pounded here in Des Moines. I haven't had any issues with storm damage myself, but we're bracing for floods that may potentially rival 1993. Luckily, my apartment is up on a hill, but my job is on a flood plane. In '93, we had anywhere from three to six feet of water in the building.

The neighbor behind us lost part of the fence. We'll be waiting a couple more weeks for the fence company to show up and replace the posts (seven total). I got some metal posts yesterday and we have it secured for now. I just wish the wind would die down. It seems like it's been blowing 15-40 mph daily for a couple of weeks now.

Most of our town was covered in about 8 feet of water for the past couple of days. This was the worst flooding in the history of the town. Water reached past the 100 and 500 yeaer flood plains. 24,000 people have been displaced from their homes, most of them with out flood insurance.

We lost a couple good music stores. They're showing boat tours of the 'czech village' area. There was a neat little store called Music Loft there. Not that great of a selection, but the guys were keen to bargain.

An EF-5 tornado took out the town of Parkersburg which is a couple minutes north of me.

Today most of our downtown district has dried out. Major flooding happened in two places i've played at alot. The paramount theater, which is i think one of the oldest theaters west of the mississippi was pretty much destroyed. they had a historic organ there too, which was not able to be removed

So far, i'm ok, but i know alot of people and players that won't be jammin for a while
