Modern day parables OR fave quotes

Sign in to disble this ad
If'n you like, post a fave quote or saying that sticks with you, or makes you chuckle while pausing to reflect on it...something you're inclined to say in conversation...you know, I wanna see, geographically, and culturally, what people would be inclined to say...

some faves that fall outta my mouth from time to time:

You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

In heaven all the interesting people are missing (Nietzsche, recalled from a blog I searched just now looking for the author of the quote above. Love this one.)

Going to church makes you no more Christian than standing in a garage makes you a mechanic. (kinda weak I know, but funny)

Constantly choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil (Jerry Garcia)

Smart people will use drugs intelligently, dumb people will use drugs the same way they use everything else- Tim Leary.

A totem newspaper is the kind people don't really buy to read but just to have, phsyically, because they know it supports their own outlook on life -Tom Wolfe

(Paraphrasing from memory)
Yeah, I mean, being Leatherface was cool and all, but I'd rather write poetry. - Gunnar Hansen

Light travels faster than sound, that's why some people seem bright until you hear them speak.

I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past. - Thomas Jefferson

"Put your money in the bank now so you can cash it out later." - quote my football captain found in referring to if you're willing to put the work in now, you'll reap the rewards in the long run.

God is dead. -Nietzsche

Nietzsche is dead. -God

The other is a variation of yours, but one my pastor says from the pulpit every now and then:

Sitting in church doesn't make you a Christian any more than sitting in a garage makes you a Chevy.

Yuma is remarkably short on colloquialisms, though. No interesting regional phrases that I'm aware of outside of, "Yeah, he's on Yuma time" when someone shows up 20 minutes late for something. I hate that expression.

I loved those, especially since my girlfriend dumped me because she was interested in the history of the past rather than dreams of the future...

I know what you mean man. If i didn't listen to the second one, i wouldn't be able to be friends with a bunch of guys I know - It's not about what you've done or where you've been, but what you're gonna do and where you're gonna go. (another quote, don't remember if i heard that somewhere or made it up )

"If your aunt had b@lls, she'd be your uncle".

That's what my baseball coach would say in response to all the post-game talk about if-we-had-done-this, if-they-had-done-that, etc.

that reminds me of...

"The world is like a ride at an amusement park. It goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: Is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey - don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride...” - Bill Hicks
