modifying /etc/hosts

I'm trying to help a friend out who's having a problem w/ a couple of her kids. The goal is to have her 'puter resolve to a differnt website than the one it's pointed at.

In Win2000, isn't there a trick to having the computer resolve from the hosts file first, rather than rely on DNS?

it automatically looks at the host file first, before trying DNS.

OK...I'd forgotten to clear the cache prior to testing.

What I did was point it back at 'loopback' (127.0.0.1). How would I change it to redirect to a different site?

get the IP address of the site you want.

You could go start... run... cmd... then "ping www.yahoo.com" and it will ping (and display) the IP address of yahoo, for example.
