So I just sold a guitar on Ebay. I have a PERFECT feedback rating with over 500 transactions, I am a Powerseller, etc..
The buyer paid for it immediately. I went to check my Paypal balance and it said the money was in the account, but..... Quote: Ship now
Payment Status: On Hold - Ship now Make sure to ship the item right away, so you'll have access to the funds sooner. We'll release the hold in 21 days unless you receive a dispute, claim, chargeback, or reversal on the transaction subject to the hold.
We may release the hold earlier if either of the following occurs: the buyer leaves you positive feedback on eBay, or we confirm that the item was delivered.* We can confirm delivery if you ship the item with USPS, FedEx, or UPS, and either use PayPal shipping labels or upload tracking information from the transaction details page. This applies to transactions within the United States.
Learn more about the PayPal policy for payment holds for eBay items. |
This is complete B.S.
I use Paypal funds to ship the items, but now, right before I have to head out on tour, I have to take money "out of pocket" to ship the guitar and WAIT for Paypal to "decide it's OK to pay me" ? That's so effed up. Meanwhile, I send the guitar and HOPE that the buyer isn't scamming me and tries to file a dispute or anything else. I mean, why do I bother maintaining my perfect feedback rating for, if not for the "security" that tells a buyer that the item they paid for will be delivered as promised in a timely fashion ?
So, I'm out funds for possibly up to 21 days (heading into a Holiday weekend and a tour), he'll have the guitar as promised, and I just have to "hope" that Paypal decides to give me my money ?
B.S.

To be honest, there's a reason I stopped using eBay. This is one of them.

I checked my Ebay and saw that everything (transaction #'s, etc) matched up. HERE'S the link to their new "policy"... PS....the person buying the bass has a feedback total of (1) ...
yes.... a whopping feedback score of ONE !
Why do I have a bad feeling about this ?
To be fair, he did pay immediately and may personally have not known about the stupid "hold policy".

If my feedback sucked, I was a new user, etc...yeah, I'd see reason for the policy. But I'm a 100% Ebay user with YEARS on Ebay and Paypal. It's complete B.S.

I have over 800 transactions (100% positive rating) on eBay over the years, I'm not a pro, just personal buying and selling of gear and other music-related stuff, and my use of eBay has seriously curtailed over the last couple of years. The last bass I sold on eBay, a beautiful Peavey BXP 5-er in a Peavey molded hardshell, for a bonafide steal of a price, got kind of a "meh" from the buyer. I'm surprised he didn't try to send it back for no reason. I felt lucky he didn't leave me a negative.
EBay/PayPal has shifted so far in the buyer's favor, it's become a serious risk to try to sell anything on there. And the rates are getting outrageous as well. It used to be cool, efficient, affordable, and fair. None of the above now.

Perhaps some musical instruments are "high risk" ... I just sold a violin just a couple weeks ago (for over $150) and didn't have any kind of hold placed on the PayPal payment.

Ebay used to be such a great service. It is getting so many negative attributes now, I don't know how much longer I am going to sell on it. |

+1
I've been on Ebay and Paypal for about 7 years, and this is making me rethink the whole thing. I just can't afford to send guitars out and "hope" that I'll get paid for them.

| | | | Happy ending....for this transaction anyway...
The Paypal Rep looked at the situation and released the funds to me with an apology for the inconvenience.
Seems like they at least "pay attention" when you ask about a situation.

Cool congrats!
... I think that's a sigh of relief for all of us who sell on eBay!

I think it's a random thing. I've sold many items on Ebay and it only has happened once to me.

I think it's a random thing. I've sold many items on Ebay and it only has happened once to me. | Still, it forces a seller to send items without being paid, and opens sellers up even more to scammers. Now you not only take the risk of having your paypal money "disputed", but you are also out of pocket for the money to ship the item.
Its a bad policy, period.

Still, as I mentioned, at least they have customer service that reviews things pretty promptly.
