I think it has to do with the soil's ph. Your soil might be too acid. Are there Oak or Pine trees nearby?
Keep in mind that moss is soft, and never needs to be mowed.

It's a chronic problem here in Oregon.

Takes work, but the best way is mow, then apply moss killer (it changes the soil pH and doesn't hurt the grass), then thatch out the dead moss, aerate the lawn and overseed with seed.

or you could be lazy and live with it, like I've started doing. Much easier. Though this year it's starting to get bad again.

My mom's front yard is full of moss, they tried a few different things to get rid of it but it just keeps coming back. I think, for now at least, they gave up and just enjoyed the green looking front yards.

It seems to like an acidic environment. Lime, lots and lots of lime will thin it out pretty good, but it always seem to come back.

+1 Oak trees result in acid soil, and shade results in moss. If it really bothers you, apply a good dose of lime every year. Talk to anyone at a local garden shop and they will tell you the application rate.

It's indicative of a low soil pH, which could potentially scorch other plants.

Pretty much follow what BartmanPDX said and it should work.

Yes! If it falls on the grass the lawmower chews it up into mulch Birds also make nests from it. It also provides shade. Good stuff actually

You know that white stuff that you put on your lawn, that is like powderish yet has some softgun-size balls in it (I think it some kind of fertiliser), put that on it. A lot. And it will die! Either that, or attack it with an iron rake. Dad said I had to rake it all up, though the first solution appeals more to my nature.

Yay!!! Another chance to discuss XtreO's "nature". So did you tell your dad? How'd it go?

(Yeah, I know, your "guitar player" hacked your TB account.....)

Exactamundo...

...and exactly my strategy when I lived in Oregon.

My first thought was a discussion of his stats on real vs artificial turf so you weren't alone.....

I would love it if my lawn was made entirely of moss instead of grass.

Thanks! I'll try to mow this weekend before the Superbowl.
