Moving to Colorado

Sign in to disble this ad
Howdy,
The family and I have made a decision to uproot, and venture out to colorado. We've been in Indiana for about 4 years, and before that we lived at the beach near Wilmington, NC. My lady's family lives out there, and we love it there.
She is about to grad. w/ a Biology/Chem degree. I've been in hospital insurance for about 4 years now.
Any tips? Venues? Areas to avoid?
We're going to be in Aurora at first getting our feet on the ground, and then plan to purchase a home in Bailey, Colorado.
We think it's a good time because our children are still young. Looking to do this in the May/June area.

I uprooted the family and moved from Gretna, Nebraska to Parker, CO for a job.

Just getting into the music scene.

We like it here. We like the weather. Parker (south east of Denver) gets hot but you can drive one hour and be up in the mountains if it gets too hot. Very little humidity.

There's quite a bit to do in Denver and enough going on in the 'burbs to keep a good bass player busy.

Seems to be a thriving indie/alt/etc.... scene. I don't know the whole picture but the folks I've met seem decent enough. Seems to be alot of open mics and sit ins.

Not sure, but definitely somewhere that I can ski and mountain bike in the same day.

Well, we have decent gun laws. I like that. Depending on where you live, you may have beautiful scenery. The cost of living can be high in certain areas but not too bad.

The bad parts are I 76 and I 25 or even I 70 and I 25 are all major interchanges for drug trafficking. As a result, From Pueblo to Denver to Greeley all has a lot of bad gang areas.

I don't care too much for the folks running our State as they don't have a clue to what they are doing. They want to close down a lot of public land that people enjoy going too but at the same time, they keep taking money and benefits away from State workers.

Kind of ticked me off. I went to a State run park yesterday to take my jet ski's out. It was $7.00 a vehicle to get in or $70.00 for an annual pass. Then on the water they have a speed limit of 45 mph. My one jet ski does almost double that speed. Now if I go to Nebraska, It's $4.00 to get in there State park or $30.00 for an annual pass there and on there lakes there is no speed limit. I even had one of there park officers on a jet ski race me 2 years ago because he wanted to see how my jet ski compared to the one he had through the State.

There are other things too that I like and dislike but it seems as of late, I am getting more and more frustrated with a lot of decisions being made by our people at the Capital.

Nice man. Colorado is awesome. My family lives in Oklahoma, for now, and we hate it. We lived in Colorado for two and a half years before the military moved us to OK. We will be totally out of the military within the year and will definitely be moving back to Colorado. We own a condo in Parker. We are also originally from Indiana. (Avon/Indy) They have plenty of park area, way more than indy, and the weather is the best of anywhere I've been. You are looking at about 95% humidity in the summer in indy and it is terrible, denver is like 5%. You will love the summer and the snow is not any worse. You get more snow in denver, almost double indy's annual snow fall, but they know how to take care of it and it is a different (lighter) version of snow than indy. Hiking...beautiful, if you don't hike now, you will....and you will love it. We loved the dog parks and went to those 2-3 times a week. Aurora has a nice one. Check out their disc golf course if your into that. Also, about the gangs thing...unless your selling drugs you'll be fine. Don't hang out in the hood. I think that you will love it. Okay, so the politicians suck...show me a place where they don't. The bad traffic is the only thing that I would change about colorado if I could.

Stay away from Colorado Springs. I really hate living here. Nothing I can do about that at the moment, kinda stuck here for a while. Traffic sucks, job market sucks, city govt sucks, nightlife sucks, way too much military in this town too...weather is awesome though, no humidity.

If I could I'd go up to Denver to one of the suburbs, Parker is a beautiful area.

I agree. I would stay up north. The springs is cool but I prefer the Denver area also. Golden and Ft.Collins are beautiful places as well.

I've lived in Denver and I miss it a ton. I don't miss the traffic, but I miss absolutely everything else. It's an amazing city!

On the note of crime/gangs I would have to say that this seems pretty small to me.
There is no area of Denver that I would feel particularly unsafe walking around at say 3am.
For a major city that says a lot, I remember when I used to live in St Louis, and that there where places you could not go due to the crime.

As far as the traffic is concerned, bad compared to what?
Aside from a little gridlock on the freeways during rush hour I've never encountered any major problems.
If you think Denver traffic is bad, I would highly recommend taking a drive through Queens NY.
during rush hour.
I did that one once and thus far I'd say it was the worst traffic I've ever experienced.

From my perspective here are a few pro's and cons about Denver.

Good things about Denver;
It's generally pretty liberal politically and socially.

It's much safer then many other cities of it's size.

The whether is great, sure it gets cold and as well hot as hell but you also get probably two months or so out of the year of perfect days, 72 degrees and sunny.

The mountains are really close and make for a great and cheap way to get away from the daily grind.

There are a lot of really great open jams about town, if you like blues there are quite a few places that cater to that.

There are also some very good jazz clubs in town that feature some truly amazing talent.

If you smoke pot it is plentiful and pretty dam close to being outright legal.

There is a crap ton of Colorado bassists here on talk bass.

If you like Mexican food there are lots of great places to eat out here.

Bad things about Denver;
If you're a night owl you'll be hard pressed to find anything open passed 10pm with the exception of bars and clubs open till 2pm.

Denver is a cow town, to me it falls somewhere in between a big city and a small town lifestyle.

There is no white castle, mello yello or stake&shake in Colorado.

West cost vr. east cost social mentality, for example if I bomb a gig most people will lie and tell me they loved it, where as if I bombed a gig back east people would be more likely to tell me why they thought I sucked.

There is a huge Spanish speaking population out here, it can be great if you're bilingual not so great if you're not.

The health code restrictions on restaurants are not great, if you like to eat out a lot this can pose a problem for awile until you find some places you like.

It is dry as hell out here, you'll spend extra money on lotion, conditioner, chapstick and all moisturizing products.

Re - dry as hell be prepared to make some truss rod adjustments.

Pot holes on the road after winter the last few years haven't been too bad but when we get a lot of snow in the winter it reeks havoc on the roadways in the form of lots of pot holes.

Hope this helps,
Samantha.

LUCKY!

My in laws just bought a vacation place outside of Pagosa Springs, I caught the bug in the mountains so now it's only a matter of time before I join you.

It's simply unreal compared to Michigan.

I went to Boulder a couple of times a few years back for work, was one of the best times I ever had in my life, during a time of my life that was absolute s#it. I literally shed a tear when I had to leave, I didn't want to return to Texas, I felt like I had found my heart there, and always felt like I left it there in the mountains near the runoff creek at Boulder Falls...

I intend on returning some day, I would rather it be sooner than later.
