Moving a computer? Changing settings?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys! I have to move in a few months, and I was wondering if that when I moved it, it would change all my settings for AIM, MSN, MySpace, etc., back to the original settings?

Like, will it also remove the blocked people, and who can contact me settings?

What's in it when you shut it down will be in it when you fire it up. Nothing will change unless you change it.

No, of course. not. They don't change unless YOU change them. You can access your accounts like Facebook from any computer in the world and the site doesn't know the difference. Everything that's stored in your computer will stay there.

Either it's on your computer or it's stored elsewhere online so it's available whether you're at your computer or not, in which case your login info is your key to it. Nothing is based on your computer's actual location since that would allow anyone who plugged a computer in at your previous location to access all your data — needless to say, this would be bad.

Most of the things you are asking about are not stored on your computer and won't get deleted.

Some of stuff is, but these settings are stored on your computers hard drive as a file which cannot get deleted unless you delete them.

Unplugging your computer has nothing to do with it. Your hard drives stores files much like a cassette tape, or CD. Once it's there it doesn't go away until you make it go away.

why would time be an issue? Why do you think you'd lose settings? this stuff is not saved locally. Reboot after you move and carry on.

DUDE: ALL of your settings are stored on the SERVER of the service you're using. This is all online. YOU WILL NOT HAVE A PROBLEM.

Computers are temperamental. Make sure to introduce it into its new location slowly, or else it might get agitated and choose to mess up your settings.

As long as you don't take the computer through any portals in the space-time continuum or anywhere near green kryptonite you should be fine.

If you want to be really sure, just keep watching the holes where you plug in all the wires to make sure that none of your settings leak out. Better still, if you seal it in a stout plastic bag, you should be able to trap any settings that do ooze out and scrape them up with a spoon.
