Mp3 questions

I have a few questions for all you computer gurus. When I loaded all my cd's to my computer, they all saved as .wma files. Aren't they automatically Mp3's? My next question is can someone recommend a .wma to mp3 converter, either free or cheap? And lastly, can I convert my entire folder at once, or do I have to convert each individual song? That would be extremely time consuming. Thanks!

Not importing as mp3 is just a setting in preferences. As for converting, iTunes will do that.

.wma files are Windows Media files, meant to be run on Windows Media Player, although they can be run on other players like Winamp. Similar to .wav files, they're typically much larger than MP3 files. MP3 flies are compressed audio files.

One very good converter I use is called CDex. Works very well, is packed with features, and best of all, it's free!

Yep, wma is the default when importing with Windows Media Player but this can be changed in the settings. Like Joe said, if you use iTunes you can convert them in there. My favorite freebie for converting audio, video, and image files is Format Factory: Format Factory - Free media file format converter
