Murdoch + Apple = Daily

Rupert Murdoch has unveiled his latest venture, an Ipad only newspaper. This is unique for a few reasons:

1) It's a paid for about $50 a year daily newspaper, most of the other ipad news ventures have been magazines. No Newspaper has mad money on the web by charging for content.

2) It is IPAD only, Murdoch is tying there fate to Apple, in fact Apple has the Daily head lining its home page today. This is not a "net product" it is an Apple product.

3) I've heard Verizon will be bundling it when it rolls out for a couple of month.

4) It's low cost, but still not free. The claimed cost is about $.14 a day retail is about a dollar a week. But with the exception of magazines most News junkies have plenty of sites from Daily Beast to Drudge to get news for free

5) It is suppose to be highly interactive, with even a section for live chats with reporters, and lots of video. In between Sky, Fox, Fox business, Fox sports and the Wall Street Journal, they certainly have reporters and assets in the field.

Will it work? I don't know. If I had an Ipad I would certainly consider it, depending a lot on the level of local coverage (a key in the newspaper business).

THIS IS NOT A THREAD FOR DISCUSSIONS ABOUT FOX NEWS, AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE EDITORIAL CONTENT WILL BE. I'm more interested in your thoughts on the News business (NOT THE POLITICS OF THE BUSINESS), if it will work?, etc. Their is no doubt in my mind that regular daily newspapers are Dinosaurs.

Too many free news apps already optimized for the iPad out there in my experience. No way am I paying $50 for this.

This is not the solution. I was disappointed by the press release. There's a ton of interesting features and no common direction among them.

Plus, it's not available on app stores outside of the US.

Neither the Wall Street Journal nor USA Today have local content.

In the Murdoch world, there's no difference between news and editorial content. Let's say he is approaching this as a business person. He has an infinite supply of content from the media entities that he already owns. His costs will be negligible, and the income potential will be significant. This is just creating a new outlet for existing content. The cost will be limited to hiring a marketing team who choose the content and format, and a small army of programmers in India.

Well the WSJ has that financial industry base. In a way it's a trade paper for a huge trade. And they can barely give away USA today. What I don't see is why someone wouldn't turn to Drudge, or the Daily beast for the same content for free. I would think the key would be special features. The one thing he may have going is that its cheap, cheaper then a traditional newspaper by far. I do find the ipad only choice interesting, while its a large group of possible users, I still think a net paper with a good app would make much more sense.

Agreed. I'm satisfied with Yahoo News online, and am still fond of my New York Times.

Saying that it will be ipad only could be a pure marketing ploy at this point, to generate buzz.
