Music that makes you dumb!

I'm not sure how valid this study is, but it's definitely interesting

CalTech grad student named Virgil Griffith has conducted an interesting (albeit somewhat unscientific) study relating music preferences with SAT scores. While SAT scores are criticized for not accurately determining intelligence, the results show that the “smartest” students’ favorite musician is Beethoven, with an average SAT score of 1371, and at the other end of the spectrum is Lil’ Wayne, with an average score of 889.

Other bands at the top of the scale are Counting Crows, Radiohead, and Sufjan Stevens. Check out the full image of the results after the jump:

Surprisingly, no style of music stands out above the rest, but rather most bands fit within the 1000 to 1150 score range. Another question is whether music can be legitimately associated with smarts.

Haha, I love how counting crows is right under Beethoven...I find their music to be really deep, even though they make me want to hang myself when I listen to them.

It does not surprise me that the Folk/Jam/Psychedelic stuff tops out the high scores and that the rap tops out the low scores.

How in the world did Jazz end up in the 900's?

Because stupid people are listening to it so that they feel smarter. Kind of like those fat John Candy-lookin' aliens in that episode of Star Trek were stealing the technology from everyone because it made them feel smart when they had no idea how to use it.

Sorry, just watched that one last night. I'll go beam up now.

...Or saying they listen to it so they feel smarter.

ROFL and they tried to have Jordy install photon torpedoes on their little ship

I just watched the one with the inorganic life forms on the planet the federation was terraforming yesterday...freaking awesome, right up there with the Q episodes.

I listen to a lot of reggae. I'm pretty dumb. So dumb it's not even on the chart.

Correlation doesn't proves causation yadda yadda yadda, but it's still interesting.

Most of it makes sense, but what's up with Jazz?

Reggae's on there. It's under Beyonce near the top.

Side note: I've had my old avatar so long that I see the new one and still take a second to recognize it.

It's like when you spend the night somewhere other than your own bed and it takes a while when you wake up to remember where you are.

Well you said "listening to it to feel smarter" and I "said saying they listen to it to feel smarter"

Basically I'm just taking your point a step further.

BTW, I always hate it when people reply to a question like that with Beethoven, I'm pretty convinced that they are not sitting down and actively listening, more like using it as white noise so they can say they listen to it....like that guy wearing a doors/stones/zep/beatles shirt who can't name 1 album.

[true story]
I met this girl at the pool hall one night many years ago who was wearing a doors t shirt. She was with a group of people and we went out to their van to go get stoned. During which time, I commented her on her t shirt to which she replied "oh, I have no idea what this means. I just thought it was cute."

^ ROFL, exactly.

I just went from incredibly attracted to you, to maybe a one night stand if we smoke enough of this and I have a couple beers.

I'm pretty sure dumb music makes you dumb. Yet my friend has a Beethoven tune as his ringtone and he's a powerful idiot.

Cool,I'll go see the dean if I can take my exams at night.

some studies say that music does help a lot with "inteligence" stuff xD, so the ones that like Beethoven might also know about music [play an instrument and stuff], not "just listen" to it

I find this very interesting.

I guess this chart must have some truth to it if Radiohead are at the top... people who are really into that band are always the first to tell you how smart they are...

I call BS with this study... How the hell is jazz not on the far right? jazz (IMO) is the most intelligent music there is!
