I was up to 2-3 cigs a day before school ended. I quit cold for the summer. My lung health has gone up INCREDIBLY. I had a chronic cough before, and now I'm fine. It was definitely worth stopping. I'm sure I'll smoke a few every now and then once school starts up, but I tend to enjoy my tobacco like most enjoy a fine wine (and I enjoy that, too!). Moderation is key in everything. But if you're addicted, by all means quit ASAP.

To be fair, I always thought of you as a little on the dumb side. . .

Seriously though, as someone who has quit smoking I can tell you right now that your plan is doomed to fail.

I discovered that any time I set a date to quit it never worked. There's always a reason to have "one more" or an excuse to push back your "quitting day".

Now, I smoked about 4 or 5 cigarettes a day (I don't think I ever had more than 10 in a day) and I had only smoked for a few years. So I wasn't in the same situation, but for me it was a matter of simply getting to a point where I badly wanted to stop and not touching another one.

No predetermined starting date. When you really want to quit, you will. It's actually not hard to stop for a day or two. What gets hard is not giving into those momentary cravings that will inevitably hit in a couple days. Every time I had one I would exercise a bit (ride a bike, jog, situps whatever) and it would pass.

Good luck.

Take my advice: quit smoking and put $100 in my account monthly..

That way, you save money and I, on the other hand, get to buy more gear and be able to record stuff..
Look at it as an investment

This is all true stuff. I smoked 1-2 packs per day for about twelve years. I planned many times to quit and that day would always come and go and find me smoking still. I tried cold turkey a few times; it never worked. The reason it never worked was because I never really wanted to quit. You have to want to quit. You will not be succesful if you still want to smoke but you're giving it up because of the cost. Also, you will not succeed if your only motivation is health. Even when facing a slow and agonizing death, you will continue to smoke until you really, truly want to quit.

My grandfather died from smoking and I've seen him cough up blood, black stuff, etc. I've seen him light a ciggarette and go into a coughing fit that landed him on the floor, gasping for air. Yet, he was smoking on his death bed, literally. In his last days, he would remove his oxygen mask to light a ciggarette. He never wanted to quit.

When I finally decided that I no longer wanted to smoke, it had nothing to do with money. It had nothing to do with my health. It had nothing to do with the fact that even then, smoking was becoming more and more socially unacceptable. I just simply decided that I no longer wanted to be a smoker. I quit that same day and have not touched a ciggarette since. That was eight years and three months ago.
And it really wasn't that difficult since I had decided that I didn't want to do it anymore.

Good luck to you.

casualmadness-
im sorry to hear bout your gpa.... i can empathize!!

quitting (for me) is about my health.... not the money despite my posts.

for all the younger TBrs out there, read on-
in my youth i was:
a sponsored skater (H STREET)
a sponsored snowboarder (ORIGINAL SIN)
a killer right wing on a traveling soccer team
a yearly trek to MT Washington to hike and shred Tuckermans!
needless to say, active

now im 29 (happily divorced, thats another thread), i have great muscle tone and im proud of my appearance...... BUT!!!!!!!..... one kick flip would send me into a coughing fit that would take me 30 mins to recover from!

doc said i have developed asthma.... which is a sign of early emphazema (sorry DeanT, that spelling escapes me!)

so kids dont smoke! i can say its the dumbest thing i have EVER done! (well the divorce thread will come up some day)

So on top of all the dough you spend you now have asthma on top of that?!!! What's wrong with you? You need to quit now while you can breath at all. This is June 3rd and Oct.8th is like 4 months from now. Any smoking at all on top of asthma can really make things permanently much worse.
I watched my Mom die slowly from lung cancer in 2002 and trust me Brother, it was NOT a pretty sight. The cancer caused a total pulminary breakdown where the linings around her lungs filled up with fluid and caused her to just stop breathing. But it took a long time and she suffered a lot as her breathing got worse and worse. Stubborn or not, you need to get a grip and smarten up. 'Cause if you don't, that's what's in store for you and it might happen real soon. )-(

word man.... im workin on it. i thank you for your story. im very sorry about your mom. but, your right, thats what im in for.

i have to see myself as a non smoker... im building up to that! this isnt gonna be easy. as logical as it may be to just quit now, im simply not there yet. however, i have a plan and thats a start! i will see this through............i wish i had gotten a grip 10yrs ago! but lets say i needed to choke up a bit on the slugger that is my health.

I was a 2-pack per day smoker for many years. The last few years I cut that down to a pack a day. I finally got a prescription to help me quite for good. The prescription "Chantix" took about 6 weeks (the prescription is stopped after 6-8 weeks) to finally quite cigarettes. I haven't had a cigarette in over a year. I took the money that I spent on cigarettes and used it to help pay for my new Ford Mustang. I couldn't afford to start smoking again if I wanted to. Good Luck!

You didn't take into account the economical costs of diseases and body problems related to smoking. That could add up quite a lot, especially at older age. --Kent
