my brother is getting a dose of karma

apparently he didn't check the coolant levels on his car and ended up blowing the engine on the Subaru Forrester he bought less than 3 months ago. i guess it serves him just for being a self-righteous $%^ all these years not to mention not sharing in the financial burden of caring for our disabled mother. if he asks me for any help im telling him some times life kicks you when you are down, good luck getting around town.

That's some pretty bad Karma

But on a serious note, why did the coolant level get so low, and why didn't he fill it up? Was there a leak? If this is a new car, I would think the warranty would cover it. If it is used without any coverage, then I suppose he is out of luck. Though there are so many worse things that can happen to someone than ruining a car engine.

it is a recent model but he bought it used no warranty no lemon law in OK. i think it was a car that was previously leased but that doesn't really matter .

the car had a leaky radiator but because Subarus are notorious for running on the hot side he thought nothing of it when he looked at the temp gauge. it was his own negligence for not checking all fluid levels and closely inspecting the engine before signing the papers.

Know what would be a real dose of karma? Pee on all his clothes. That would really suck.

That's odd though, because usually there is an indicator light when the coolant gets too low, no? Then again millions of Americans drive around with check lights on. I used to think that was an urban legend, until I met a doctor who keeps telling me his check engine and brake lights are on, but he 'doesn't have time' to deal with it. Seriously? I offered to fix it but he said 'nah, I'm taking it in for servicing in a thousand miles.'

Seriously?

Yes. It doesn't matter how smart or well educated you are... there are still people who just don't give a **** about their cars/safety.

Then again I'm not better. My license has been expired for a while now, and uhhh... I swear, this weekend I will get it renewed.

Not in my car. I've head to get two separate coolant leaks fixed (one was the radiator) over the last 8 years, and neither time did the check engine light come on when I was almost completely out of coolant. I only noticed because the temp gauge was running hot. Now I constantly check the coolant level and keep spare coolant in my trunk just in case.

Well, I'm no expert... although it really depends on the model year. If it's a car from the 80s then maybe not. I don't know if coolant level is standard in OBDII but as far as I know, the cars that I've driven with OBDII have had a coolant check light. Your car may be old enough not to have it.

My car's check engine light has been on for the last 80,000 miles or so.

my CEL's been on for the past month or so- luckily i just drive to and from school. however, it's ticking me off because i don't have a code reader and i don't want to pay $60 to plug someone else's reader into the computer when i can get my own reader for $40.
