My buddy's air canon video

Check out this video my friend made of the Mechanical Engineering club's air canon. He filmed and edited it himself. He is entering it in a video contest at our school. Watch it, rate it, comment on it. The video quality is kinda crap, but still a pretty good video.

The air canon is pretty awesome. Last time it was shot, the cantaloupe (read: ammo) flew completely outside our allowed firing range, which is on the order of a quarter mile. The entire thing was built by Mech E students in their spare time. He has a better camera now, but we haven't fired the canon recently as we have to get permission to do so from campus police.

Under current laws these are considered an Illegal "destructive Device", therefore I cannot condone anyone making anything like this...

But theoretically My potato cannon works just like that thing... only with a different propellant and a grill ignitor for a trigger...
If such a device existed...

Very cool...

There is a big 'ol competition for punkin, chunkin called funny enough punkin chunkin, you should get your buddy to enter it...

I'm not totally sure, but I think we have been in that competition. As for legality, the laws in NM are pretty lax, especially around here in small town Socorro. There's another one of these on campus built by the physics club, and they also have a trebuchet that I know has been in the punkin chunkin competition.

Very Cool...

When you Get down to it, there is a lot of Engineering in an air cannon. you have to safely store some pretty high pressure safely, and release as much of it as possible in the shortest amount of time... Sounds simple, but when you get into it, can be very tricky...
