My computer is sick.:(

Sign in to disble this ad
Today my computer started acting funny and then shut itself down. I immediately unplugged the internet, restarted the computer, and tried running Avast!. Much to my surprise, Avast! would not start. So I tried AVG, no luck. Tried Hijack-this!, no go. I tried AdAware and, although it ran, it didn't find anything helpful.

After a few hours of fighting, I got Avast! and Hijack-this! to work and it turns out that it's some kind of Agent trojan in win32. Avast! said that it removed it, but when the computer was restarted, I still got a windows icon that said it has detected spyware and that it recommends that it download a program to fix it(I beleive this message was part of the Trojan as it was written a little weird).

After many more hours of running scans and rebooting, I finally decided to try to get online and download another antivirus and, well, no can do. The computer will not connect.

So here's my question: Can I download some sort of antivirus with this computer and burn it to a disk so that I can run it on the infected computer? or do I need to go to a store and purchase some antivirus software? or other?

Any help is appreciated.

My father in law had the same infection.

Have you booted into safe mode and run the scans?

Does it say "Virus Alert!" beside your system clock by chance?

Not yet, I was just about to but decided to get on here and post this thread first. I'll do that now.

I had a similar problem with a computer at work. The user claimed all he did was right click a picture to use on his desktop and he started to get pop-ups to download an anti-virus.

Running "Spy-Bot Search and Destroy" in safe mode did the trick.
The anti-virus software that was already loaded in the computer didn't find anything.

+1

This will fix the issue but you will have to change some setting with your active desktop and a minor change with your system clock registry setting to get rid of the annoying message.

My father in law got it from a bit torrent server, you?

I just got it for free at download.com by cnet (only place I trust for free software anymore) - the google search gave a different program that wouldn't install on my machine so make sure you go through download.com to find it.
