My dog almost just choked to death in front of me

Hey guys,

I'm a shaky mess right now. I just took my dog Mercy out in the yard for some exercise and to enjoy the nice day. I don't know what she got in to, but she started choking and hacking. I didn't pay too much attention, as she eats everything and that happens on occasion. Well, I look over a few seconds later, and she's completely quiet, laying flat with a look of terror in her eyes, which were watering terrible.

I ran over, and didn't know what to do. I was freaking out. Her eyes start to like roll back in her head. I start hitting her on her back, pretty hard, trying to dislodge whatever. I tried to get my finger in her mouth, but her jaw was clenched completely shut.

I rolled her over on her back, and start trying to emulate a Heimlich-type thing. Luckily, somehow, whatever it was dislodged. It was pretty surreal. She just laid there for a while, looking around completely dazed. Now she's laying in her bed. She still looks totally out of it, but at least she seems okay.

I'm still kind of shaken up. My hands are trembling a little. I don't know what I would have done if she died right there, with me being completely unable to help her. She was looking in my eyes while I was trying to whack the obstruction out of her throat. If she died looking at me like that, I would been a freaking train wreck.

Anyway, she didn't, and she seems okay. I just needed to vent this off my chest a little. Thanks for reading, guys.

Oh, and here she is. One pic was after she herniated the disc in her back, and needed her wheels. She no longer needs them, but won't ever be 100%. The other pic is more recent...

Sheesh ... not much I can say, except that I'm very glad she came through and that you were there to help her. Had both cats and dogs myself and understand the bond.

Steak for her dinner tonight?

My (now long gone) dog used to eat wasps alive. They'd sting her in her stomach, and she'd vomit them back up. She did this for years and was fine, but the first time this happen (at least when I was paying attention) I had a similar experience to yours.

Not fun

Glad she's OK now. When I first got one of my boxers she started choking on something one night and then passed out just as she coughed up half a corn cob. I freaked out when she fell over but she turned out alright. She ate much better once she got the corn cob out...which did not come from our trash. not sure how she got it.

Glad your dog is OK. Having kept dogs for the last 30 years I know how much they mean to people.

Coincidentally I have a 8 month old Jack Russell called Jaco who nearly choked at the weekend, the difference was that he was just laying in his basket looking at me as I passed by and I bent down to stroke his head, like I've done every day since he was 8 weeks old and he turned from being the happy, waggy little pup he's always been into a snarling little monster - so it was me that nearly choked him

No, just kidding but I did pin him down until he calmed down...since then he's been snarly all weekend. He's never been the least bit snappy before....I wonder if it's because we had him castrated a couple of weeks ago...maybe he's holding a grudge

Well done, Eric! I'm very happy to hear Mercy is okay. I guess it just wasn't her day to go the big dog park in the sky.

Actually, it will be the dark stinky bowels of a giant gerbil. But on the bright side he might spelunk his way to a bar that serves gerbil poo drinks...

BUT for the time being, he did good by his pup at least.

Man, that must have been an awful few minutes that felt like an eternity. I'm glad Mercy's OK. Good job for keeping your cool enough to do what needed to be done.
I'm glad for you both.
A drink for you, and a biscuit for her, on me.

Them weinerdogs seem to get into lots of trouble... I had a similiar situation last November when I found ours caught in a snare trap in some woods at the end of my street. Almost choked to death in front of me. The sound of him using all his might to gasp for air was the most the most awful thing. He had the snare and himself all wrapped around the tree it was attached to and I had to try my best to undo this thing in the dark with a flashlight under my chin. I'd say he only had a few minutes left...

Glad to hear yours came out ok too! Take her to the vet asap for a check up.
