Any sure-fire recipes for getting the smell of skunk off a dog?
My wife found a recipe online that includes hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, but it said not to use on the dog's face. Of course, this is where he took the biggest blast. |

we mixed it with some baby soap. we used it around her face, but were very careful to not get it in her mouth or eyes.
otherwise you are in for a good 4 months of stink

| | | I doubt anything will be ruthless enough to get the smell out while being gentle enough to be used on the dog's face.
This is the recipe that seems to work the best.
* One quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
* One-fourth cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
* One teaspoon liquid soap
Caution: Make up only as much of the de-skunking remedy as you can use at one time. It is unsafe to bottle and store this chemical combination.

| | | | My family always used a bunch of tomato soup (like a tub to put the dog in for a while) and it always worked |

I've used it before and the previous poster is nearly right....it may take a few times, but it makes it much better. After the juice, the smell is usually not real noticable until the dog gets wet. Then it's time for another bath.
Why would you wash your dog with an unsafe chemical combination? If it's unsafe to store, it's unsafe to use on the dog.
Good luck.

| | | | Use something like Dawn dishwater detergent. It contains a degreaser. Skunk scent is oil based. Use several times and, yes, follow up with tomato juice.
You have to do this IMMEDIATELY. If you've waited too long, it's not as effective.
You're going to smell skunk for 4 months every time your dog gets wet again.
I feel your pain.

1 tsp. liquid soap | I'm glad it worked for mythbusters. Sincerely hope it works for you, too. My dog got sprayed in the face the summer before last. We used this 3 times on him (made with Dawn) and we still smelled skunk for months. Not a fun time. But a friend of mine who's dogs get sprayed occasionally while hunting swears by it.
