I'm sure to keep my mancard for that one. 
I never really catched the first season, the first episodes.
It seems to me that at the start they layed it on too thick how the relation was between mother and daughter was. Lorelai was to much of a "best friend", a little too juvenile for her age. And Rory was portrayed as too much of a sweet innocent naive girl. Gradually the characters become more "normal" as the series progressed.
What I like is how the town life develloped in the series. How silly the customs and everyday life is in the town. Kirk, Luke, Taylor,...
I love that break from the girltalk and bantering.
I also love the grandparents. Both awesome and awesome acting. Just wack-snobbish.
Okay, I might get into this show a bit too much.
