We have (had?) an iMac we use as the family computer and my MBP which I use for my own work. I think the iMac died yesterday. It consistently crashes with a kernel panic while booting up. Tried all the Open Firmware commands recommended by some folks. Tried reformatting and reinstalling, still, dead. I have still to try to MCU reset option with the internal micro switch, but I'm not sure that'll do the trick if it's a hardware failure. The hardware test shows everything as passed.
Anyone had similar problems and was able to resolve them?
BTW, it's an old PowerPC iMac G5.

I know that on the old eMacs there was a recall on a cathode on the motherboard. It would swell and cause the machine to freeze and eventually crash. I have one powerpc iMac that's doing what your talking about. It only started acting up recently. I suspect, like yours it's a motherboard. Probably about a 150 dollar fix if you take it to your local mac repair place. |

BTW, it's an old PowerPC iMac G5. | I still have this model. Try the switch first (and while you're in there, make sure the RAM is properly seated. Then, try booting from the OS X CD that came with your computer. This should rule out any corrupted drivers, etc. on the hard drive. Just put the CD in the drive and hold down the C key to boot from the CD. You may have to power up once to get the CD into the drive, then power up a second time to hold down the C key.
If the CD boots, use Disk Utility to check the hard drive. Once you've run Disk Utility (keep running until no errors are found if any are found in the first place), reboot and let it boot from the hard drive.
If you still get KPs booting from CD then you probably have a hardware problem. Some of the original iMacs (mine included) suffered from bad capacitors (see www.badcaps.net for an explanation). Apple extended the warranty for the affected iMacs (sold from 9/2004 through 5/2005 IIRC), but I'm not sure how long they extended the warranty.
Let me know if this works for you. |

Let me know if this works for you. | I booted succesfully from the CD last night while formatting and re-installing, but it kernel panicked at mid installation. I'm gonna try the switch tonight and see if that helps. Otherwise I'll take it down to the apple store.

I had a kernel Panic, they replced the Motherboard, did not work, so they gave me a new Mac Pro to replace my old G-5!

So at work today, I was looking over user submitted trouble/support tickets and I came across one from a Dr. Wilser. First thing I think of is wilser from TalkBass and I say outloud "FAIL" while reading the doctors trouble ticket. My co-worker asked me what the heck I was talking about so I related to him how I know this guy on the internet named wilser who is always failing so I figured this Dr. Wilser guy was probably related to the wilser I know!
