my latest side project

as a machinist I have been asked to make or restore a lot of odd projects. I never thought a carnival train would be one of them...
This is a model G 16, made by the miniature train co, for the 1952 Alaska state fair. The owner decided on a resto-mod after I had gotten started. I restored the trucks, and even cut new axles. Then he decided he wanted the chassis stretched 14 inches, and a door added. (originally, the conductor stepped over the side. ). The engine cover was also supposed to be bolted on, and lifted completely off to access the engine. The hinge and latch were my own idea

The guy also has the old miniature "steam" engine from the Last Frontier Hotel, in Las Vegas

The pics in the back ground are not mine. The guy actually went and bought a lathe, milling machine, a plasma cutter, mig welder, and a soda blaster...then told me to make a list of the other tools I needed to finish the job, out of his own shop

Lee, that's a real cool project. And a very nice detailed model. The proto-type for that was the Electro-motive FT or F3 I believe, commonly called "F units" or "covered wagons". The freight units had 4 wheel trucks. The more powerful passenger units had 6 wheel trucks and were called E units and had extra space for an on board steam generator.

I would love to see how the project is coming along, and what paint scheme the owner has chosen for his railroad.

Sweet! We had an amusement park here (Kiddieland) that had MTC equipment - they were common here in the midwest.

Vista, I agree - it looks like it was styled off a Phase I F3 to me.

Safe to assume you have been to the Railroad Museum in Green Bay?

My brother worked in the art department at Walthers, back in the '70s. He got a brass Big Boy for Christmas, one year. That was a nice train.

I'm sorry - penicillin might help with that.

I'm at about 50 Locomotives ( kinda lost count!) and 500 freight cars in HO scale, we should chat at the next Seattle GTG
