So I go on Youtube today and I get the black box again. This happened a few months ago for no reason, so after some searching, I switched Safari to 32 bit mode and things have worked fine until today. No we are back to the black box. I updated and reinstalled Flash, re-set Safari, all to no avail. Where it gets strange is that Google Chrome, which I just downloaded, won't play Youtube either, so it looks like it is something besides Safari? Is it the Mac or is it Youtube? Regardless, this is really F'in aggravating and any help is appreciated.

Run the software update check, and pay attention to anything in the list (if there is one) that mentions browsing or compressed media playback.
Or maybe you ad-blocked the Youtube player?

It's a very lightweight browser using a different rendering engine than Safari, and is really quick. Just a thought.

Anyway, I found a fix for Safari. New to me, there are these things called extensions you can download. One of them, under "productivity" on the apple site, allows you to select the video format before it plays. For whatever reason, things work again. I don't actually do anything - it just flashes the format right before it plays. Also, I changed Safari back to 64 bit and it still works. I'm sure Youtube will crash again soon. Not sure why we have such issues in this day and age with something so basic.

The work-around is to add an s to http to change it to https which seems to cause the videos to play correctly. I expect that this problem will be remedied in a future upgrade of Adobe Flash Player. |

Oh, wait.
Sorry, I couldn't help myself because someone always posts this in tech support threads, without fail.

| | The "G" is for Gustav | | Join Date: Jun 2006 Location: Maryland | | | Looks like it was a Google problem. Videos played on Chrome, and the URL was automatically directed to the httpS as previously mentioned. Safari still works with the extension and the regular http. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
