the doctors believe she might have cancer (I'm not too sure which one). She's going for tests at the end of September. She's 49, I'm 19.

Please, please, please send your prayers!

You got it, CG. Prayers sent for your mom. In the meantime, as Tama said, keep your head up. The test could turn out negative. Or if it's positive, they could catch it early, it could be very treatable or removable.

Cancer is not necessarily a death sentence. My mother has been cancer free for 30 years now.

That's hard news. I've been there more than once, and it's not easy to digest.

Stay strong, for yourself and your mother.Remember that more people make it through than don't.

My thoughts go out to you both.

Best wishes and prayers. At least there's a better chance of her surviving now than there was even just a few years ago. Chin up!

I found out a week ago that my Mom [a breast cancer survivor] has a mass the size of a grapefruit in her rectum. Heavy chemo and a colestemy will be forthcoming. The next scan will give us data as to how far the cancer has spread [liver?/lymph?]. We went throug a similarly sad state of affairs seven years ago with my Dad and Alzheimers, but this time, I'll be alone as the primary care giver.

crispygoat, you have no option but to be strong, and by that I mean continue as you might if this hadn't happened. If you must mope, do it in private. Your Mom will appreciate some degree of normalcy and even humor. Who knows? Perhaps it's not as bad as you might be thinking, but brace yourself for the worst nonetheless.

And of course you have my prayers.

Cancer can be beat! People do it everyday. But don't take any chances.

1. Get multiple opinions at every step of the way. Never trust a single doctor or treatment approach.
2. Try everything simultaneously (add unconventional and experimental as well.)
3. Educate yourself. There are many websites and forums, many are for specific types of cancer. Online you can find others with similar problems and you can find out what's working for them. The Internet is an incredible resource for up to date medical information.
4. Never delay or put off any treatment.
5. Stay positive. If the treatment involves chemo, patients often get sick and depressed and they stop eating. It's tough, but you have to force them to eat. The good cells in the body need nourishment to fight the chemo.

I can't find it online now, but my wife had a "Cancer for Dummies" book that was a great resource.

My Mom had colon cancer that spread to her lymph nodes. They have said for the last year and a half that she is cancer free.

Like Pacman said, cancer isn't a death sentence anymore. People do kick it.
