I just bought a new laptop. Sick system. Gateway P-7811fx. 2.3ghz Core 2 Duo processor (with a 1066mhz FSB and 3mb LS cache), 4gb DDR3 RAM, a *very* high end NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS video card with 512mb DDR3 dedicated mem, a 200GB 7200rpm HD with an extra bay (I since added a second HD for all my data), and... 64-bit Windows Home Premium.
As soon as I got the 'puter, I fully formatted and reinstalled Vista. It's a straight-up Vista disc. No bloatware or crap at all. Kudos to Gateway for that.
Anyway... It sucks. I've had a few random BSOD's (which I have not seen since Win 98!), it's sluggish, and just acts funky. Before you ask, ALL of the drivers are current. I have Aero turned off (the joke that it is...Bill Gates' attempt at being Steve Jobs for a day ) and all unneseccary services turned. off. I always have over 2gb of ram free, and the CPU hardly ever breaks a sweat.
It's just pathetic. My old Gateway M680 system running XP was snappier and NEVER crashed... and that had archaic specs in comparison. I'd LOVE to go back to XP Pro SP3, but many of the drivers (audio, cam, and mic) are not available for XP. I've checked several forums and Googled it, with no luck.
So for now, I'm stuck with a sick system in terms of hardware, and a pink elephant in terms of operating systems. What an effing joke!!! It amazes me how many people (Vast minority, but still) swear by this piece of crap OS. I don't even want to bother with Windows 7 I'm so frustrated. Just give me the effing drivers for XP and I'll be THRILLED!!!!!

Vista was OK, but not really that much of an improvment over XP, and a definite derailment as far as shell performance is concerned. Windows 7 is a whole different ball of wax, and yet it's just the first public beta. I think Microsoft got better by taking a hit where it hurts: the wallet.

If you really need windows, you can run windows with it too, but I bet after a few months of only going into windows to run updates, spyware, adware, installing driver updates, blah blah blah, it will get old. I dropped Windows a long time ago. Right when 0SX came out, I pretty much abandoned Windows. Not to start a war here, but I see you obviously know computers Eric, but why put all that nice hardware to work for such a crappy OS. If not Mac OS, then why don't you look into Linux? |

| | | | I've discovered something yesterday. When I create a .bat file and try to open it with notepad using right click -> edit, I get an "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect" error. This is due to the edit command itself is incorrect: it should be something like "notepad %1". On XP, you go Folder Options -> File types and change the open command. You can also add new options.
That dialog is removed from Vista entirely. You can only change the default program that is runned on double-click, but cannot alter anything else. I had to go to the registry and edit it manually.. Why remove a completely normal and useful OS function? |

But I use Windows for about 80% of my apps. Once all the bugs are worked out of Vista by the suckers who use it first, I'll go ahead and get a copy.
