I built a roof!
Lemme be a bit more specific. My office was built in what used to be part of a warehouse. When it was built in the summer a couple years ago, it was a quick job, and not much thought was put into it. Well, I suffered through last winter freezing my nards off, wearing a coat a huddled by a space heater, so, NO MORE! I said to myself as I shivered while trying to work(~looking at talkbass).
So I put down my papers, so to speak, and grabbed whatever I could find laying around.
As you can see from the pictures, the actual roof of the building is about 10 feet above where I built my own roof. That, combined with the fact that one of my walls is all window (covered by an advertisement, yes, my view is amazing) = one freezing cold office.
Tools:
1 power drill, 2 drill bits and 1 philips screwdriver bit
1 5-step ladder
Building materials:
2 pieces of 1x4, about 2.5 feet long each
5 2x4's, 8 feet long each
a bunch of 2 inch wood screws
a bunch of drywall plugs
4 90-degree metal brackets
5 pieces of plywood 8 feet long, various widths
Time: About 30 minutes.
Here you can see where I drilled the 1x4's into the wall, then attached the 2x4's using brackets. Can you tell I eyeballed everything? I won't be flying to the moon in this thing, so I don't think it matters.
On the other side of my office, I just let the beams rest on top of the wall. Sloppy? Yes. Do I care? No.
Then it was simply a matter of putting the plywood sheets on top. At this point my manager came in asking a question and stopped mid sentence and she saw me heaving the plywood up top. Rather than asking what I was doing, she simply grabbed the last few sheets and passed them to me saying, "well, you look like you could use a hand". The final result:
So now the cold air doesn't fall on my head, and the heat from my little space heater actually stays in the office, rather than just laughing at me while rising out of the room. I'd say it was a half an hour well spent, for the sake of staying warm for the rest of the winter. My office is already toasty!

Get over here, hold this! Drill that! Cut that!" I guess I absorbed some of it after all. And yeah, I tested the wall anchors by uh... hanging off them. Heh heh.
