My ongoing diet findings... the gut fat

Sign in to disble this ad
i'm still going hard on the diet front, interesting things i have noticed.

One is how hard it is to reduce the gut fat compared to the outer layer of general fat covering the waist.I have noticed this type of fat is more resistant of being worn down and takes a bit of effort to reduce it.
I have attached an interesting article that explains the toxic effect of the gut fat. This is more defined as the build up of visceral fat in the peritoneal cavity which gives you the beer belly look, the article is more aimed at females but explains well the side effects of this type of fat on your health.

I've only heard and read about the opposite: How visceral fat/belly fat is much easier to get rid of (through diet and exercise) versus subcutaneous fat (the layer that hugs tightly to your skin).

Example: Women with bellies will have a much easier time getting rid of their bellies through diet and exercise, whereas women with bigger thighs and butt will have a hard time slimming them down even if they're eating perfectly and exercising regularly.

But I know what you mean about visceral fat and its dangers I myself am going to do my best to get rid of mine in the next 6 month and develope a sustainable habit.

Belly fat?

Leg lifts every day as part of your exercise routine and that crap will be gone pretty quick.

As far as that goes, regular, vigorous walking will also burn fat from your midsection. Not as quickly as leg lifts, but it will get the job done.

Actually you cannot concentrate fat loss on one area. It comes off (more or less) evenly all over your body.

Basically you just have to eat less calories then you use. That is the only way you will lose weight.

^^^ This, calorie deficits.
I've recently lost over 65 lbs of fat and added considerable strength and speed over the last 6 months. There are no quick fixes that one can sustain for a lifetime. I'm confident in my health change being long term as its based on simple time proven techniques.

Balanced diet focused on natural and minimally processed foods with low animal fat percentages for calories. There are certain elements that can aid our efforts such as protien for muscle development and fiber to make us feel filler with less calories.

Regular exercise balancing endurance and strength. The endurance training burns large calories while exercising and the strength training increases the resting metabolic rate.

I find it interesting that so many people are focused on fat around the waist line when people notice weight loss most readily in the face. It all comes off at about the same rate as our bodies tap into calorie stores (fat reserves).

In the end though its all about what works for the individual.

^ Another benifit to resistance (strength) exercise during a calorific deficit is that it reduces the rate of muscle loss. When you are cutting the calories, you're body will try and get rid of that pesky muscle mass, because that is less efficient than fat, in that it requires more energy to sustain.

I've lost 20 pounds since August. I went off to college which made it pretty easy to watch what I was eating, new place and all. I eat a lot more when I'm home than I do at school. I've also been training for cycling, riding at least 4 hours a week. Using rudimentary calculators online, I have burned between 2,000 - 3,000 Calories on the bike certain days. I also did a some lifting, usually 2x a week.

I wasn't too overweight, ~190 lbs at 6'1", but now I am 170.
