My thirteen yo son is getting a “write-up” by the bus driver for saying the word, “gun.” There was a kid on his bus listening to an ipod playing the Arrowsmith song, “Janies Got A Gun” and he sang the chorus out loud. My son said the bus driver started screaming, “you can’t say that word, you can’t say that word.” The music kid said, “I didn’t do anything wrong” & she told him that he was getting a “write-up.” A bunch of the kids started saying how unfair that was and that it’s not against the rules. One of the kids said, “what if I said 'gonorrhea?'” Bam, write-up. My brilliant offspring (I don’t know where he gets this stuff, I swear… Halo ) says to his best friend across the aisle, “dang, now just the word gun must be able to kill ya.” He told me that right when he was saying it the bus went unreal quiet, one of those weird “moments.” Well, she heard him and BAM! Write-up. Six kids in total got ‘em. Five write-ups during any grading period will garner an in-school suspension.
We’ll see what happens today when/if the driver follows through. If she does and I get a call from the school things are going to get potentially school board interesting. This is ridiculous.

Of course, that was because someone threw and hit a bus driver with a battery and the driver swore up and down that it was me when it wasn't. That was a long bike ride home for something I didn't do. |

This is pretty lame. Hope his punishment isn't too harsh and they don't "make an example" out of him. |

M | Ah I see, doesn't look like its much to worry about if its just one out of five. Its like getting a dumb speeding ticket. Just be cool and after a while the points come off your license. If it went any further it might be worth mentioning at school, but at the moment it looks like it was just some bus driver having a bad day and doing something stupid that has no real consequence. Why bother raising an issue at teh school (and perhaps colouring the schools view of you and / or your kid) if this this is likely to just amount to nothing.

Good thing they weren't talking football... "... yeah, Cutler works well out of the shotgun, although I miss the days of the old run and shoot offense..."

- slapped a fellow student because he said Michael Jackson was not cool.
- dumped a fellow student head first in a toilet (with the help of 2 other fellow students who also got 'F in conduct').
- called a teacher an a**hole for asking me to stay in the line when comming back in from recess.
- when a teacher failed to show up on time I decided it was a cool idea to play catch with a fellow student's back pack from one end of the room to the other, only to be caught by the dean who just happened to be passing by.
- filled one of the back walls on the chapel with countless hair band logo graffiti.
- skipped (escaped?) with a few fellow students only to be caught several blocks away by the dean.
- (repeats at least twice for every grade): *ALLEGEDLY* grabbed fellow female student's butt during recess, class, standing in line for the cafeteria, after class, before class, or all of the above.
- was caught while hiding up on a tree branch with a couple other fellow students drinking alcoholic beverages.
- listening to Michael Jackson tapes during chemistry lab.
- threw a stone at a fellow student when I tried to slap him for saying Michael Jackson was not cool and he took off running.
- tricked fellow student into drinking a soda that had been spiked with various insects (darn clear glass bottles!)
- refusing to admit to the school psychologist that I was a satanist for listening to hair bands.
- stole Michael Jackson's 'Bad' cassette tape from fellow student.
- telling 4th grade biology teacher that she was hot (well, she was!).
- painfully yelling "SH*T" (in spanish) when the dean picked me up by my side burns for not standing in line when coming in from recess.
I would have NEVER dared say "gun"! that would just be unthinkable and I would have probably been suspended or worse, not allowed to listen to MJ!

The bus driver went on a power trip to try and get respect from the kids and he's now probably disrespected more than ever by more than just the kids, but the parents as well. A bit ironic. |

This is the story as she told it- “Mrs. **** (principal) had boarded their bus Monday and told them that the ‘gun stuff’ has got to stop. Apparently some of the boys had been making ‘gun gestures’ and having conversations about guns to each other and she was concerned that it was distracting and disruptive for some of the younger students (6th, 7th, & 8th graders on bus) who might feel threatened by it and wouldn’t understand that they were playing.” (At the school basketball & volleyball games the student section cheers in unison, “Boom! Head shot!” for any 3 pointer or spike.) “The boys, in an effort to circumvent Ms. ****, were singing a song about guns and the driver told them to stop. Addison argued with her about it and is suspended from the bus for three days.”
I asked, “is the suspension for singing the word ‘gun’ or arguing?” She replied, “the suspension is for creating a potentially dangerous situation by arguing with the driver & distracting her.” I replied, “and said argument started because the driver objected to the content of the song they were singing. I understand that the driver has full control over the bus but would the argument have ensued if they were singing about cars? Which kill a heck of a lot more people than guns?” “I’m not going to argue semantics with you Sir.” She answered, “it was an inappropriate song, particularly so after the principals discussion with them.”
“Do you have the phone # for the school board?” I queried. (Hesitation.) “Yes, the # for Transportation, which handles the busses, is ####.” I then asked, “and the # for the President or Director or whoever is in charge of the school board?” (Longer hesitation.) “I’ll have to get back to you on that.” “O.K., thank you.” Click.
She did call me back in about five mins with the name & number. I am sitting here in utter disbelief & fuming. I want to get the exact story (from my son’s perspective) this afternoon.
