My Son Is Showing Signs Of Being A Drummer...

Sign in to disble this ad
....and I need a starter kit for him to learn on. He's not yet 2 years old so it doesn't have to be professional grade stuff but it'll need to be something to peak his interest and keep him progressing. I know it's early but I showed signs of being a musician when I was 3 so I figured that he'll probably take after me. I know there are some drummers out there that know about stuff like this. Any recommendations?

That's a classic kids drum set. The bass drum might miss some boom but the snare sure is punchy !

Believe me, he's past that. He learned the pots and pans before he was able to walk. Classic post though.

I'm so sorry.

I hear they are working on a cure for that. I'm sure there are some very useful treatments on the market now. Will your health insurance cover it?

A lot of music shops have little mini drum kits for kids, just get him something like that. Not the best quality, but they're cheap and work well enough.
Maybe check like Walmart etc? In Aus they sold mini drum kits at Target/K-Mart for cheap and they actually sounded pretty descent. Me and my mate actually bought one and used the bass drums and snares in our full sized kits.

That 4 piece up there is pretty good.

Build him an electric kit. Cheap, easy, not loud, can be loud, no maintenance. You can build a full size set for his size. Though you'll need a module and some cabs, but I'm assuming you have one of those.

Ludwig, PDP and Tama all make very good starter kits. Look used, and remember that any kit can be made to sound at the very least decent with good heads and tuning.

check out craigslist for First Act "fusion" drumkits. I got mine for 75 bucks. 4 piece, wood shells, tuneable heads. I replaced the heads and kickdrum pedal and my kid has a pretty serviceable kit that sounds decent.

New, they're like 180 bucks. smaller scale, mind you, but not 2 year old small. My son is 6 and it fits.

ok, they have a new smaller set than the one I pictured with snare and one tom, kick pedal and hats for 99 bucks, then they have this kit, for 209

kinda lame, so I'd say look for the "fusion" set if you can find one.

He's only 2, I think he'll know if his son will be a drummer when he gets that first report card.

Mapex used to have a small sized kit, it had a huge sound though.

I think It'd be cool to have the little guy hold down the time if I were you Cap. Don't let these bozos ruin it.

BTW; Post some pics. I've got a pic of me at 3 behind my Pop's Ludwig set (28 Years ago) complete with orange shag carpet.

Good Luck,
God Bless, Ray

First Act?!?!? ewww yuck, even for a little kid yuck. CB percussion makes a surprisingly cheap/good kit for little guys. Model# is JRX55PK, it's a little 5 piece kit. My cousin got one for his son a while back.

You know, there's a million dollar bet on them being made at the same factory. And no offense, have you played the kit I mentionned? I for one HAVE. I can go play it right now. And you can yuk all you want, it sounds fine. There, better?

Yes I have actually, Everything with the First Act name on it I have touched has been terrible, a toy at best. Guitars, basses, drums... all of it. I'm glad you are happy with the sound of your First Act kit but is sound the main concern when choosing a young childs first drumset?? Gonna be recording playschools "My first LP"? I'd be more concerned with durability/playability. I'm not saying CB is worlds better, just worth the price difference imo. Plus as I said earlier my cousin bought one of these kits for his son years ago and it has held up all this time and the kid plays almost everyday for 15-30 minutes since before his feet could reach the pedals(and he beats the **** out of them) That's why I thought I'd recommend the CB kit. If you like First Act that's cool, more food for thought for the OP poster....which I assume was the point.
