There is a website called MyGallons that lets you buy gallons of gas at today's prices, then you can use them in the future when prices go up, hedging you against price increases. On the down side, if prices collapse, you get the shaft. Kind of a cool concept, but it only really is worth it if you're like me and drive a lot.
Example, you notice that prices are on a downtick, you buy 100 gallons for $3.75, and five months later, they jack the prices to $4.75. You smile knowing that your next 100 gallons are bought and paid for at the $3.75 rate. You fill up, and it's 20 gallons. You have 80 left, and then the next week, you pull in to fill up, and notice that it's now $5.25, whip out your MyGallons card, and put in 20 gallons. It gets taken from your account at the $3.75 rate.
Anyone else aware of this program? It's hedging for the common man, and I wish I'd have thought of it and had the expertise to pull it off. For now though, I think I'll take advantage of the prices and buy a bunch of gallons at today's price. I have a feeling they'll be over $5 next spring. |

There are so many ways they could get cut down, the linking of financial networks notwithstanding.
A lot of people in SoCal are border-hopping to fill up these days, and I heard the mayor of Tijuana, as well as a highly-placed person with Pemex, are putting up "No Gringos" signs, an not letting Americans fill up. I've heard their gas is $1.00-$1.50 cheaper- government subsidies, no doubt.
I'm not recommending MyGallons, but I admit to buying several hundred dollars' worth when it was $3.69, and storing it in 5-gallon cans (sta-bil added, of course!) in anticipation of a bigger hike this holiday weekend. But the huge hike didn't happen this week around here. So I still have enough for two weeks in my Metro, which I will probably put half in the wife's car, half in mine.
I don't think the prices have finished rising, I'm calling a ceiling of $4.80 for this year, at most. Next year could actually go down some, not much, but some, as demand for gas and diesel starts drying up. They're already noticing a 3% drop in Houston, more in other parts of the country. I wonder if the layoffs nation-wide are playing into that at least a little? Most of my co-workers have switched from their F-150s and Dodge 1500s to battered Honda Civics (it's the wife's car, man...) and every last one of them wants to know where to get a car like mine! |

We'll never see a 2, possible even 3 at the front of the price again but I'm leary about the whole buy now, use later concept for fuel. Not to say it won't make whomever came up with a butt load of cash...just not for me.

| | | | I have a theory on why gas prices are so high, unfortunately due to the "no politics allowed" here at TB, I am afraid to post it. It really makes a lot of sense though. It came to me while hiking.

I throw a little sta-bil in mine, but yeah, that's been my method. |
