As for compensation, it never matches what is truly owed in cases like this.

Come on. | It's not a suprise to me. I remember a case similar to this in Alabama back in the 1970s. As I said before, compensation never matches actual damages done in cases like this. The victims are poor, have no clout, and are usually happy to get anything

Hard to imagine what kind of monsters perpetrate such things against human beings; horrifying that these were government programs.
"The Tuskegee syphilis experiment[1] (also known as the Tuskegee syphilis study or Public Health Service syphilis study) was an infamous clinical study conducted between 1932 and 1972 in Tuskegee, Alabama by the U.S. Public Health Service to study the natural progression of untreated syphilis in poor, rural black men who thought they were receiving free health care from the U.S. government.[1]"

Probably a more beneficial outcome (IMO) would be to do whatever can be done to tarnish & expose the legacy/image of any lawmaker, doctor, or anyone who participated in this. |

While I sometimes think (in a perfect world) eugenics could be beneficial, the way it is used by people quickly crushes that idea. Forced sterilization is not the way to go, and no amount of compensation will ever fully make the victims whole again.
As a side note, wasn't NC also the state that arrested that woman for having "truck nuts"? Remind me never to go there.

And while we're broad-brushing entire states, isn't California the land of the fruits and nuts??? Which are you?
It was an awful time, people did things they need to be punished for, and WON'T - but don't assume that the PRESENT residents of this state can in any way be associated with those that were involved in that episode, hmmkay? I'd bet most of those involved at the political and medical level are either dead or nearly so at this point.

Though honestly, it was more of a joke, so I should probably have worded it a bit differently (or maybe added a smiley or something ). And I really hope that most of the people nowadays find those actions deplorable, it would be rather unpleasant to have history repeat itself more than it already does.

Actually I am a Florida native although I grew up in SC. Nobody has broad brushed a state either. Gard, why be so defensive? It happened and if there were not a bunch of evidence, no one would be talking about a settlement.

I spent a lot of time around Orlando (as I'm sure most folks here know...), and also in the panhandle (Ft. Walton Bch - dad was stationed at Hurlburt Field).
As for the broad-brush, Vincent made this comment:
"Remind me never to go there", which is pretty broad-brush if you ask me. I wasn't trying to be defensive, just point out that if that's a reason not to visit a place for you, then you're writing off a lot of people that don't deserve to be....he was just kidding, so no harm no foul.
