NDD! (New Dog Day)

Well, after 3 months of investigating, visiting, interviewing, and considering, my wife and I adopted our dog yesterday.

His name is Jerry and he is 85 lbs of extremely cool dog! He's a 3-year old retired racer that we adopted from Greyhound Pets of America (http://gpa-mn.org) and he's big -- but he's housebroken, sweet, lovable, and smart as a whip!

Before adopting, we spent a lot of time reading and learning about Greyhounds. Contrary to popular belief, Greyhounds do not require a tremendous amount of exercise. As racers, they are sprinters, not endurance runners. They are not hyper nor are they difficult to handle in a household. Quite often, they're referred to as "45 MPH Couch Potatoes."

Jerry is actually a bit more "doggy" than some Greyhounds -- He was the GPA Hound of the Month in January and they had a great write-up on him ...

"He’s definitely a very happy boy, and there are times when he acts more like a black lab than a black greyhound. Jerry will get super excited and go bonkers for 2-3 minutes at a time, pouncing on toys, running about and just generally seeming like he’s gone crazy. But it’s over just as quickly as it started. We’ve discovered that it’s best to leave him alone during those few moments and let it run its course. It’s pretty hilarious"

That's a perfect description! (They actually do a very nice newsletter -- you can check it out here: http://gpa-mn.org/newsletters/2011/janfeb11.pdf)

Bottom line: We are getting acclimated to one another and he's already carving out a giant-sized space in our house and our hearts. He's really a great dog!

Adorable pup. Greyhounds are great dogs, my sister has adopted 3 retired racers over the years.

The key is to NEVER have him off-leash except in a fenced-in yard or other enclosure. We actually had to sign an affidavit to do so as a part of the adoption process.

Nah -- I'll convert him the same way I converted you!

Sweet dog! I know people with the same and I've been told pretty reliably that half the time, they just want to flop on the sofa with you.

I'm glad you adopted a grown dog. It's nice to give them a chance instead of people always going for puppies. You warmed the cockles of my heart bro.

Beautiful hound. Do you have his racing history? Seems like that would be interesting.

Thanks and yes we do ...

This is from the website, The Greyhound Breeding and Racing Database. His racing name was "Show Money" but when he was rescued, he was named Jerry (As in Jerry Maguire -- "Show me the Money.")

He wasn't much of a racer but he's a great pet!
