Need advice from Dallas residents

I've been debating on moving to Dallas for awhile now, and I'm taking an impromptu weekend trip down this weekend (leaving in the morning) to check out the city and look at a couple apts.

I'm just looking for some ideas of things to do, that are more for locals. Im not really looking for touristy things.

I'll be in the downtown / uptown / deep ellum area.

Good bars for rock or blues music, or any cool shops?
