need help troubleshooting loss of right channel in stereo

Sign in to disble this ad
Just a few days ago the right channel on my stereo system started to crap out. Currently the right channel generally doesnt work, but sometimes if i turn the music up loud, the channel starts working again for a little while. I checked all physical connections and nothing is loose. The signal chain is
LP player -> Dynaco Pas 3 Preamp -> Power Amp -> Speakers.

Any ideas of where to start trouble shooting this any further than physical connections would be greatly appreciated. My gut tells me its gona be the something with the Pas 3, because its a vintage piece of equipment.

I don't know the PAS that well, but if you can, flip the L/R outputs (So L out is going to R in, and R out is going to L in) from it to the amp and see if it still happens on the right channel. If it does, power amp is bad. If it moves to the left channel, something with the pre.

I had an old stereo, and used to have the same thing with the left channel. It turned out the the "balance" pot on the preamp was old and noisy. Turning it back and forth a number of times in quick succession was a temporary fix. Maybe check that out and spray some contact cleaner into it?

What he said.

Works on any pot. Do them all and save the rest for your bass, amp. Good if you have any vintage stuff. If they sound scratchy, that is.

Every time I've seen that issue it's been with an amp that uses an IC for the output instead of transistors....and the IC went bad. Usually not worth fixing. What kind of stereo is it?
