Need An HVAC Man ASAP

Looks like I need a new air handler and pump. Before I go dropping $8K+ on the project, I'd like to get a second opinion from a professional who does not have a vested interest!

Please PM me and I'll fill you in on the details.

Thanks

Riis

If you are paying 8k for just an air handler (which is just a fan, basically) you are paying too much. Unless you own a 5,000 sq ft. home/compound...

What do you mean by "pump"? a compressor for the AC?

Yes, the heat pump / outside unit.

Is it small, squat and has a fan on top that blows up? Has copper pipes to it? It's outside the house? We just call em condensers

If you need both the Furnace(air handler + heater) AND a condenser...i can see a heating guy charging 8k...especially now. with the weather getting hot. I'll tell you this...you are paying a hefty sum for his time during this peak season. I've looked at packages (Dukane 90+... Janitrol 90+) for my house (1400 sq ft) at dealer costs...around 2500-3000 for the machines and lines.

You got it, thank you! I always called the attic unit the "air handler" and the outside unit the "heat pump". I have 2 pair...one for upstairs, one for down. They're matching Trane 1400's, ~15 years old, R22. Got a leak in the air handler coils. The contractor suggested Goodman components, 14 seer, 410 A.

can't you (him) just replace the coils? Or is the whole systems shot?

Coil repair / replacement would run ~$3K plus there may be rust damage to the condensation tray. This is one assessment / estimate. I'm reluctant to drop major bucks into an older system.

Check around-for that $$,you better be getting TOP OF THE LINE,big time.Granted it is bust season for any good a/c company so sometimes they inflate the price because they dont need the work and can turn work away.Shop around, don't always go lowest bid-lotta your truck slammers come in cheapest and when a problem-nowhere to be found.Get a reputable, local dealer who will come out if a problem and be there after the sale.Unfortunately, the hvac field has a lot os scheisters in it.Iv'e did hvas for 20 years and it is hard to compete with the trunk slammers-they don't pull permits, put el cheapo stuff in and will never stand behind their work.

What models should I be considering in terms of quality / reliability? BTW, I need a 2 ton, 14 seer system.
