Need a new lawn mower - recommend one

Sign in to disble this ad
My old lawn boy is done. Need a self propelled (RWD preferred), gas powered mower.

don't want to spend a crap load of money (ie.: no deere for me).

What should I look at/stay away from?

Looking at Craftsman given the good price point.

I have a 3 year old Craftsman push mower with 5 HP engine and mulching blade. It works well except for the automatic choke. When the engine is cold, no problem. But it's very difficult to restart when hot. Sometimes I have to just give up, push the mower into the shade to let it cool down before restarting. When I need to buy another mower, I will look for manual choke and primer.

I've had no problems with my Craftsman. I think overall the lawn mower engines are pretty durable. Keep it simple as PaulMac ^ has found. No reason to get fancy with a simple small engine machine. I think generally the Honda engines cost a bit more. I've worked on the Briggs and Stratton engines with no prior experience (only basic mechanical knowledge) and it was very easy to figure things out in there.

Get a new Lawnboy? Got my wife this one. She loves the electric start and serious torque. Reasonably priced for what you get.

Note: I can't mow due to my crazy strong grass allergy. Seriously, the doctor who tested me for allergies was having folks from all over the hospital come on over to view my swelling. They marveled at my extreme reaction. Should have thought to sell tickets.

Here's the Consumer Reports mention of MTD mowers. My MTD has a red generic looking deck with a great Honda motor. Attach the bag, or remove it for the mulching mode.

So, you save over a Lawn Boy, Toro, this brand or that. Where are they sold? Big stores that Lowe's, Home Depot, Menards...

I used to do my own lawn. I have a guy that mows, weedwhacks, edges and trims the bushes now for $130/mo. I can't maintain and store all the equipment for that, let alone the time involved.

I worked with a guy who worked at MTD for a while... They actually make most of the lawn boy, toro, etc mowers on the market

but we have one of these at home, and I must say, it does a nice job

Get it from Sears----if it breaks, even 2-3 yrs down the line, Sears will replace it for free. I have done that already AND also 3 times (!) with my Weed Whacker.

I got a Honda like this one:
HRX2172HXA

I love everything about it EXCEPT the handle where you grab it.
It is very uncomfortable and hard to grab just right. Honda needs
some "human factors" engineers. The handle plain sucks.
Luckily, it is self-propelled so you don't need much effort once you
get it going in the right direction.
