Hey everyone!
I wasn't sure where to put this, but I'm in my last year of school and I need to write an essay for my Advanced Higher Music.
I was going to compare a Debussy piece (Clair de Lune most likely) with another similar piece. Does anyone have any recommendations? I was thinking either a Late Romantic, or Impressionist solo piano piece.
Thanks in advance!

| | | | You could do Arnold Schoenberg, since he was around the same era, but had completely, completely different music.
It'd be the battle of romantic -vs- dissonant.

It'd be the battle of romantic -vs- dissonant. | I don't know that I'd really classify Debussy near the romantics, but that would definitely be an interesting study in contrasts. I think that would kind of unbalance the essay though, because to really get into the meat and bones of the Schoenberg beyond the obvious (dissonance and serialism) he'd have to go pretty in-depth with the analysis, which could mean a disproportionate amount of space required to cover the piece.

Or... one of the things that Debussy claim influenced him, or at least got him thinking away from the earlier forms of harmony, was his listening to the Balinese Gameleon at the Worlds Fair in Paris (was that 1899, 1900?) Anyway, very different music, but interesting to consider the affect in had on Claude.
Any comparison of French to German music at that time is interesting.

Really helpful, and again sorry if this is in the wrong section. Mods can feel free to move it.
Pavel and Satie have really interested me lately, I might need to take some time and look at their work.
Thanks again!
