Need Some Advice

Hey gang. I have acid reflux disease, so I go to see a gastroenterologist once or twice a year to get a prescription for medicine. The last time I went, I had gained like 20 pounds since my last appointment, and my doctor wasn't too happy. That was about...I think 6 months or a year ago. Well, since then, my weight has really gotten away from me, and I have gained an additional 60 pounds. Yeah, I know. Bad. I have been trying to work out and eat less recently, but for some reason, since the last time I weighed, I gained 4 pounds.

It is almost time for my next appointment, around two or so months away, and I am freaking out over what he is gonna say. When I go to the doctor, my blood pressure tends to be high because I get extremely nervous and worked up, so thats what causes it. I have take it at home before, and it was normal. I just have horrible anxiety. I am worried that it may have elevated my blood pressure just a tad though too. So, I have been freaking out about all of this recently, and wanted some thoughts from you guys. Do you have any advice on how to deal with going back to the doctor my next time. I just don't know if I can deal with him getting all pissed with me. I already know its bad, and I am going to work on it, but of course he doesn't know that for sure.

So, I came to you guys. I don't know if there are any excuses I could use or anything to help ease the lashing he is going to give me, haha. Thanks guys!

Ask him to prescribe you Medical Marijuana (if that is legal in your state). That may help with the AR and the Anxiety. Probably wouldn't help too much with the weight thing though.

Just food for thought.

walking is good....stairs instead of elevators...stay away from fast food and sodas....but i suspect that that much gainin such a short time may have a medical reason

go on South Beach diet.....have dropped about 30 essentially staying away from carbs. Treat it like it is a permanent thing, not a diet.

Haha, I am thinking that pot giving me the munchies may help me GAIN weight.

And its not a medical reason. I have been through so many tests for thyroid problems and everything related to diseases for weight gain. I am fine. I just have a horrible metabolism.

Eat a high-fiber diet. Fiber makes you very full, with little caloric content.

Thats not a horrible idea, but I heard that completely cutting out carbs can cause heart problems later on. And I kinda need the stuff that counts as carbs, because those are high in iron, and I was anemic at one point, and from then on, I have tried to eat stuff really high in iron. I know other stuff has iron, but since I eat carbs most of the time, thats my iron source.

Buy a light bike and ride like hell. This is what I did to lose weight and it is working.

Well, I have it too.

Learning I had it was actually a good news more than a bad one, as doctors had been pondering for a long time what my ailment was.

Allergies, cancer, asthma, etc... until a lung doctor said it was acid reflux. I had a test done and bingo.

Since that I have fixed my issue and can take care of the problem at the source and I have not had any of the regular symptons (shortness of breath, flu-like symptoms).

It's all a question of triggers. In my case, stress is my #1 trigger, which you get around by organizing yourself and also not bothering as much. Stupid stuff would make me angry, like idiots at work, politics, whatever. Now I just relax and enjoy the ride.

My #2 triggers are certain food items. Onions are one for everyone, especially raw. You will proceed by elimination. Another one for me was pop. So that is gone. Coffee, if I drink too much of it. Avoid coffee at all on the week-end and keep it only for the week if that keeps you going.

The thing you need to do is also eat less, more often, and slower. Masticate a lot. I used to eat lots and fast and that's what caused the damage, on top of the stress.

Doing that will actually make you lose weight. Eating more often smaller quantity. And join the gym, that is what I did, I go there at lunch time 3 or 4 times a week and grap a Subway (no cheese) on the way out. I also eat very very little on Sunday, almost to the point of fasting. Believe me, that helps a lot too, both with the weight and the acid reflux issue.

Also if you are in the US and have a Costco card, buy as much Omeprazole as you can and stick it in your desk drawer, in your car, your home, etc... You'll thank me.

And PPIs (as they are called) have to be taken alone, no food for 30 minutes after.

Calcium pills don't do crap, don't waste your time.

Thats funny as hell that you said that. I am looking at exercise bikes. I think I am gonna get one of those recumbent bikes.

I got a commuting bike made to commute in cities to work. I ride it everywhere.

Maybe you need to be chewed out? That is what it took from my doctor to get the point across to me. She was nice and friendly about it for about a year as I slowly gained weight, all the while I was ignoring her gentle suggestions to lose weight.

I got lit up on one visit and basically told to write my will now so my family would be taken care of when I die from heart disease or a heart attack.

Hm. I never had the flu like symptoms, just a ton of heartburn, and my food backing up back into my mouth. Throwing up basically. And it burning like hell. Its not a specific food that triggers it. I could drink water and it comes back up. The flap to my stomach is pretty much busted, and wont shut all the way to keep food from coming back up. My medicine doesn't really stop that, but stops it from burning me up and messing up my esophagus.

What exactly is Omeprozale? And arent PPI's like...something protein inhibitors?

Trust me. I am only 19, and I know I will face horrible problems when I get older if I keep this up. I have lost weight, gained it back, and repeated this for as long as I can remember. I have been fighting the weight issue all of my life, and I have been chewed out time and time again. It doesn't do anything except make me feel like crap and not want to go to the doctor again.

I don't think weight issues are your only problem. Good for you for jumping on this early and trying to get a handle on it.

I traced my weight issues to a lack of self esteem. When I got a handle on that, managing my weight was easier.

Ah, you are right! I also have OCD, which I take medicine for. And yeah. I want to make sure I get this under control!

the ups and downs are no good for you either....it may be that "keeping it under control " is not the best option and a more radical approach is needed,like a drastic change in lifestyle......

I am assuming it stems from being joked when I was really young for being bigger. But thanks for the support!
