I thought this was interesting. I know many will not like it. The funny part is that when it comes to the environment, most of us are very good at saying what some else should be doing, and we tend to feel we have good rationales for our own habits.

I wonder what the carbon footprints of my tarantulas are. Can I keep them, at least?

Yeah I thought about the strain domestic pets put on the world...but the problem is if we don't take them in and feed them we have stray dogs and half starved cats in every ally way.

At this point we need to take care of animals, we owe them at least that for manipulating their genetics and behavior for centuries to the point where they cannot survive without us.

However animals should be spayed or neutered and pet stores should be burned to the ground to make way for and improve the quality of animal shelters.

And what's the comparable "footprint" of having a child? Just wondering...

Oh, brother. What's the negative environmental impact of making basses or bass gear?

I understand what they are saying as far as acreage to produce meat, but they don't grow cattle exclusively for pet food, they grow cattle to feed people. The inedible parts are what they make puppy chow out of. To my way of thinking that makes pet food a wash since people are eating the better parts of the same animal anyway.

I think the people who try to find the flaws in everything (including owning pets) are an even more negative impact on the environment and society.

unless you consider the carbon foot used to produce the clothing you wore to do so, as well as the gun and bullets. then there is the carbon footprint of what it will take to dispose of the animals.

Despite the fact that you are a Falcons and Auburn fan, I approve of this statement.

Silly PETA-types, I feed my dogs sea kitten based foods, deal with it.

Amen to this.
But seriously, when are groups going to stop capitalizing on "global warming". When is the fad going to end.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
Carbon is the 15th most abundant elements in the Earth's crust, and the fourth most abundant element in the universe by mass after hydrogen, helium, and oxygen. It is present in all known lifeforms, and in the human body carbon is the second most abundant element by mass (about 18.5%) after oxygen.[14] This abundance, together with the unique diversity of organic compounds and their unusual polymer-forming ability at the temperatures commonly encountered on Earth, make this element the chemical basis of all known life.
Just putting it out there. The great enemy of our environment is the building block for life on this planet, especially human life. I'm not sure that I follow. I'm sure someone will be along to explain it all to me though.

The folks who did that study are not PETA types. I think they make a good point in that all we chose impacts the earth, and we should be conscious of our actions. I see nothing wrong with owning a pet, but I think an enviromentally conscious pet owner should engage in off setting behavior.
