I've got mild tourettes, and it manifests itself in the form of ticks (manageable, but the urge to do these ticks is always at the back of my mind. Infact, right now, I'm fighting not being able to do it now that I'm thinking of it). Have they exhibited any forms of ticks before this?

I've been chewing my nails from the day I remember myself. Nothing works. You should consult a professional, my parents didn't.

I'm sure you were kidding around. However, there are cases where that's not exactly the right solution ...

My son was diagnosed with Tourette's when he was about 8. He had several tics that got pretty bad for a while. The worst one was spitting, though he was VERY careful to only do it outside and, if he could get away with it around our family, he pretended to spit if he was having a tough time controlling the urge.

He's 14 now and several years ago they subsided to the point where if you didn't know he was diagnosed you'd never know. Even my wife and I have a hard time spotting them now. However, he does tell us that he feels the urges from time to time, but he's become so good at hiding them and "managing" them that he does't think anyone would ever know.

I'm 19 and had nervous tics since very young. at one point i had several different ones that i repeated almost in a loop. there's not much you can do to stop another person having them. the best you can do is to try and calm them a bit if it gets worse on that particular day or moment. stress and really uncomfortable situations trigger and worsen the tics, so if possible, avoiding those situations will help.

nowadays i don't have any tics. i did it by "simply" concentrating and being aware of if i was or not doing them(i got used to rolling the eyes and twitching half the muscles in my face to a point of not noticing it), and stopping. at first it's like trying not to scratch a really bad itch, but it'll get easier.

when i was very young, maybe 5, i started to bite my nails. whenever my mom saw a bitten nail she put a drop of Tabasco in each bitten nail and made me lick it. it didn't take long for me to stop. seems a bit harsh, but it's effective.

I bite my nails, I guess its a nervous tic. Its something I mostly do while driving, for some reason. The whole week I was in Maui I didnt touch my nails. When I got home I was able to avoid the habit for about another week before I started again.

I used to bite my nails off really short, for no apparent reason. I started carrying a nail file around with me, & whenever I caught myself about to bite I filed instead. It worked, & I don't have to carry the file anymore (about 30 years on). Every now & then I'll use teeth to take off a hangnail that's in the way, but that's it.
