Nestle's EPIC Fail on Facebook

Was anyone keeping track of this this morning? Nestle faces an illegal palm oil controversy brought on by a Greenpeace initiative and the lash back on their Facebook Page was GROSSLY mishandled by the page admin. I included to a link with some screen grabs on top of the link to their page, because they've been deleting posts.

Precedent setting mismanagement of Social Media. This is a real time case study.

It's complicated. Nestle are a giant faceless corporation, one of the biggest multinational food companies, and they obviously make their plans around profit. But OTOH they do not do any palm oil harvesting/production, they just buy what's available to buy. It's the locals, the "natives", that have destroyed their own rainforest. So I understand why Greenpeace targeted Nestle, as one of the biggest consumers of palm oil, but really it's not like Nestle is some kind of Satan going in and killing orangutans--more like they are ordinary "American-style" consumers, doing what consumers do, and the people selling them the goods are the ones actually committing the evil and destruction. Stopping Nestle from buying palm oil from that country is a good positive step, but RAGING and demonizing Nestle just misses the mark.

Ah, so passive destruction of the earth is acceptable.

Why do you hate orangutans and our planet so much?

No, but demonizing Nestle for overconsuming palm oil from an unsustainable source is like demonizing a fat kid for overconsuming Cheetos and Twinkies. The real "bad guys" are the ones doing the actual raping of the rainforest. Yes, we can "get to them" by drying up the demand for their goods, but (continuing the fat kid simile) the solution for the fat kid is to educate him/her and provide viable alternate choices; not to scream that fat kids are Earth-killing devils.

Of course we have to dry up the demand for products that result in so much eco/animal damage, but we have to do so in a sensible way.

You have a car. It emits CO2. CO2 hurts the atmosphere.

Surely, you must be a nature-hater.

I'm not really sure Greenpeace is right in this situation to attack Nestlé, since the company is a member of Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) organisation (http://www.rspo.org/?q=om/970)....so the whole thing seems ridiculous..

But yeah, having a person that can be mature and keep a cool head under criticism is really important for a large company navigating through social media...this wasn't handled properly by a long shot heh..

How did Nestle epic fail?

I see a response stating that "get it off your chest, we'll pass it along." As well as a semi-sarcastic remark. However, there's nothing that wreaks of fail. This is blown way out of proportion. I guess it's just what the orangutans need.

No way, man. I walk everywhere I go and I make sure not to exhale in order to reduce my carbon footprint.

A minor correction...

Your car emits CO (carbon monoxide). Humans - and other air-breathing creatures - emit CO2 every time they exhale. CO is harmful. CO2 is not.

Carry on.

The individual doing the posting for Nestle took much too personal a position. Making personal, snarky, and sarcastic responses to individual posts is really bad form for someone representing the company to the public. In the age of online social networking, it's a fairly significant corporate PR fail - nothing Nestle isn't used to dealing with, however.
