Netflix's roku thingie for streaming movies

So, my wife just got me one of these for my birthday (early, but convenient because I'm home bound recovering from my surgery) and I gotta say that it's amazing! it doesn't interfere with your DVD delivery, it has it's own separate queue and you can watch them in any order and the quality is DVD-like, playback is instantaneous, rew, fwd, resume play ...pretty frigging cool!

The only problem is that the selection is limited, but there are a lot of those old horror B movies I've been meaning to watch, but DVD night is kind of a shared thing with my wife, with this little thingie I can watch all MY kinds of movies on demand and we can watch the stuff we both like and the newer titles when the DVD arrives.

Thumbs up

Netflix just started streaming through Tivo. AFAIK you have to have a hi def Tivo. So now in addition to being able to stream movies from anywhere with my laptop or run the laptop through a TV with a VGA input (works well), at home I go right through the Tivo, which sees the "Instant watch" queue I populate through the Netflix website.

Coupled with using Redbox for the newest releases (an area where Netflix can frankly suck), I'm set.

I've heard their steamer/player is pretty good, but from what I've read the quality of the playback is all in the speed of your internet connection. The slower the connection the more compression (I guess) is used. Another interesting thing is there are a couple of Blu-Ray players out now that can stream Netflix as well.

I had my TV unhooked a while ago and was streaming some movies (on the computer) as my only entertainment. The selections of movies I see now have actually gotten better believe it or not. I hope they add more.

A while back I bought a DVI to HDMI cable and an optical cable to go from my computer to my home theater system so I could do the same thing. Stream Netflix plus play some games on the wide-screen. I still haven't hooked it up.

Pretty cool gift. Congrats!

They have a way to sort on HD movies and the picture is very nice. On SD the picture is... SD. I'm more concerned with convenience than absolute picture quality. So far I've had a problem with audio on only a couple of movies.

I have RCN broadband and use it with a 61" Samsung 720P DLP I've had for about three years. Picked up the TivoHD refurbed for $170. Sweet

I agree. I can stream movies on my Xbox 360 and I've watched a bunch of movies with my kids.
