We are waiting to see about a Verizon iPhone before we commit to Alltel/AT&T again. Also could use another iPad, but waiting to see if we NEED version 2 or if we can get by with a (what I assume will be) a very cheap Version 1.

Can't iPhones be jailbroken and used on any carrier?

Also,...that's kind of soulless to restrict vacation time based on product release.

Yes, but only on GSM networks (in the US, that's AT&T or T-Mobile only). Verizon and Sprint use a different, incompatible type of network (CDMA). Think AM vs FM - GSM is higher bandwidth but shorter range, CDMA is the opposite.

Despite the fact that a lot of people in the US seem to want it, I'm not sure a CDMA iPhone makes sense for Apple from an economic perspective - outside the US, CDMA isn't used much (some Japanese and South American networks use it, and that's about it) - almost all of the rest of the world uses GSM, so the economies of scale aren't really there.

Also, Verizon historically like to have control over the software that goes on phones they sell (look at all the crapware they put on phones like V-Cast, etc) and this wouldn't sit well with Apple.

Sure, as long as you don't go to update anything or get iApps, or they'd iBrick it.

After the iPhone 4 debacle last year, I think they'd tend to disagree....sorry Gizmodo. No scoop for you.

I sense future mixture of buyer's regret and envy as the zealots line up in a couple weeks...the early iDopters... I can't wait for the litany of awesome new sales-stat-filled threads by a certain someone here. wink.

I have a college friend who now works as an engineer for Apple, and on the iPhone. He and I discussed this at a Halloween party and I told him the only thing that was making me not get one was that there was no Verizon version.

He said:

A: He hears that a lot.
B: You won't have to hold your breath very long before you see one for Verizon.
C:Apple pays for his service for his iPhone AND his iPad...they get mad when his charges reach into the several thousand dollars a month range (he spends a lot of time in China and other places at manufacturing facilities).

So, in other words, yes. very very soon there will be a Verizon phone.

If the new iPad has a USB port I'll be all over it.

Sure it does. A bazillion people are on Verizon, and a good chunk of those will switch to the iPhone when it comes out.

The Android changed that. There is less control now.

A good chunk of people, yes... in the US. That's a fraction of the worldwide market for mobile phones. Think globally.

Ever used a Droid? Verizon have added their own user interface and a bunch of pre-installed crapware. This is why Google wouldn't release the Nexus One/Nexus S on Verizon, because they wouldn't let them sell it with all their added crap, as they insisted on a "pure" Android experience.

Yes. I have a Droid 1 since the day they came out, and my wife has a Droid Incredible.

I don't remember a ton of crapware on my Droid or my wifes. Does it say Verizon on it? Sure, but who puts out a mobile phone with absolutely no indication on who the carrier is?

What is this crapware you are referring to anyway? You mean Facebook, Amazon MP3, Twitter?

My droid didn't come with "crapware" either. In fact I thought it was pretty void of anything when I first got it.
Sucks to be a retail employee for Apple right now... but I'm pretty sure those types of jobs suck 90% of the time anyway regardless.

I don't care about any iPhone stuff.
All I want is an iPod Nano with a lot more space. 16GB just isn't enough, man!

You must have got lucky. They're shipping them now with game demos (Madden), video players (Blockbuster) and various other stuff that can't be uninstalled without rooting.

The iPhone has no carrier logos on it whatsover, by the way.

Weird. I picked up one the other day at Best Buy and it had an AT&T logo on the screen.

On the screen, not on the actual case.

Ah, gotcha. I was referring to the screen.

If it really is true that the iPhone is coming to VZW, then Verizon is about to take over the cell phone market in the USA.

My Droid X has the Blockbuster and Madden apps pre-installed, plus a few others, I think. As long as they aren't on the home screens (easy enough to remove), they don't get in the way of anything and are pretty inconsequential.

Two months ago, I was SURE I was going to wait for Verizon to get the iPhone, but the Driod X changed my mind completely. The Droid X does everything I would want from an iPhone. On top of all the fun stuff and handy tools, it's also a really good phone (a feature a lot of people seem to overlook these days).

Same with my Droid 2. I actually had to check and see if I had the Blockbuster app. Actually, I still don't know if I have the Madden one.
