Angry New car is not so new anymore....

So my girlfriend and I recently purchased a brand new Ford Focus. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee as my daily driver, so this was basically her new baby.

Anyway, she is a nurse and just finished an evening shift. When she walked from the hospital back to her car, she arrived to find that some prick has rear ended it! There is a fair amount of damage, but it probably looks a lot worse than it is. Being a modern small car, there is a fair bit of plastic on the back end. This plastic has been torn open in two places and punched in substantially. Also the boot (trunk?) has some damage as does a tail light. The hit must have been at an average speed as the rear head rests have shot up to their full extension from being in the lowest position!

As you could guess, no details have been left by the other driver I can't believe some people!

Obviously she is pretty upset by the whole thing. I don't blame her really. The car is so new that it hasn't even reached its first service yet...

I live in a relatively small town and the area that it happened in is mainly residential so I'll be patrolling the area for the next few days looking for a white car with front end damage. The Police have said that there isn't much they can do about it, which is true, but it doesn't make it suck any less.

Dammit!

Anyone else got a new car sob story?

If you do find the offending vehicle, I've got five words for you: sugar in the gas tank.

My new (2002, last car was 1990) Subaru Outback got the driver's side rear bumper scraped up on the final leg of a Roadtrip down to Florida...not too much damage, but enough to actively annoy me....At least I was able to repaint the bumper and will soon do the body.

The street it happened in is just outside the CBD. Unfortunately CCTV doesn't cover the area.

I've been thinking about what I might do if I see the car. Sugar / rice in the tank crossed my mind already! I would hate to get the wrong car though! Some poor innocent person that just happens to live in the area and recently got their white car damaged then ends up with sugar in the tank to top it off...

Yup, it's all down hill from here now. My last car got its first big ding (nothing this bad) at a gig. Some a$$hat tried to park next to me in a spot that was half covered in snow and then scrapped my side as they backed out. After that, since I lived downtown, I had a new scrape on the back bumper probably once a month. The worst was someone who scraped hard enough to pull the little side blinker light out of the bumper. Popped it back in, good to go. Just something you get used to I guess.

My new car however, is only three weeks old at this point. And if I came out to find it in that shape, I'd be pretty pissed.

About 15 years ago, a friend of mine (we were all 16-17) was at home and just happened to walk out in time to see a car full of a-holes drive by and bust out his rear windshield with a baseball bat. Absolutely no clue who these people were, just random vandalism. Well, he didn't call the cops because he felt they wouldn't/couldn't do anything about it and decided he'd rather just leave it alone. Sure enough, he saw the same car parked in an apartment complex with the windows down (it was an old car-very recognizable) and so they took a quick trip to the grocery store and bought 5lbs flour, 5 lbs sugar, 1 gal vinegar and a big bottle of fish oil and proceeded to pour it all over the interior of the car.

I'm not saying I condone that kind of behavior, but those kids had it coming. This is slightly different, because I'm sure it wasn't intentional (although driving off without leaving proper information sure was) but it reminded me of that story.

Yeah, my 2010 Dodge Grand caravan was door dinged bad on the pasenger's door (only 3 months old). Parked @ a Korean resturant for lunch and when I came out, there it was.

There are a lot of jacka$$es out there.

Insurance?

Its often easier to claim when the person buggers off, cause that way there is nobody to agrue that it "wasn't their fault"

Yeah, we have insurance, but because we don't know who caused the damage, we have to pay the excess and lose the 'no claim' bonus in the process. The car is insured in my girlfriends name and she is only 25 so the excess will be about $700 - $1000 from memory. Still cheaper than fixing the car ourselves, but its still a $1000 that someone else should be paying

I was 16. I'm a very responsible person, so my parents saw it fit to buy me a brand new Jetta. I hadn't even had the car for 6 months when this girl who was in my math class rear-ended me. She wasn't paying attention to a stop sign because she was late for work. That was the only time my dad let me say whatever I wanted to in front of him....I guess he understood.

Anyway, I'm sorry about your car. It blows. Hopefully you find the guy eventually.
