New Computer Build (Pics coming soon.)

So it's back to a windows box for me after nearly a year and a half with a Mac. Only reason is AutoDesk software (AutoCAD and Revit, to be exact).

So, because the system requirements for Revit are virtually identical to those of a gaming platform, and because I don't feel like shelling out 1200+ for a PC, I figured I'd build the thing myself. Eventually I'll dump a Terabyte hard drive and a recording soundcard it in when I get more money.

That being said, I'm wondering what a good free antivirus thing is, as well as a spyware killer. It's XP x32, which is what AutoDesk recommends for their stuff. (see? They don't trust Vista either.)

Any recommendations for good free software and things to make XP more nicer are welcome.

Avast! is a good antivirus suite available in a free edition:

For after-the-fact malware removal, the Norman Malware Cleaner is efficient, IME. Where other similar programs only did half the job at best, it finally eradicated the tenacious Virtumonde trojan from my system (along with a lot of things I never suspected I had). Get it here:

Here is a blog page dedicated to neat tweaks and tricks for XP:

Why thank you good sir!

I'm planning on going mostly open source/free on this one. Like Firefox, VLC Media Player, Open Office, Audacity & etc.

You've misunderstood, you don't have to pay. You should fork over fifty bucks, but you don't have to. It's like those ****ty ass museums. There's recommended donation to get in, but you don't have to pay it. You may feel bad about not paying, but you can get in for free.

Hrmmm? AMD?

If i'm not wrong, they lost the last price-to-power battle with Intel a while back.

I used to be an AMD guy, but now use intel. I think intel still leads the pack. YMMV.

Same here.

For viruses, spyware, malware, etc., I use Ad-Aware, Spybot, Windows Defender, Avast!, and ZoneAlarm. The version of ZoneAlarm I use is a beta for a 64 bit OS (which I'm using with coughcrappycough Vista), and it comes bundled with Kaspersky antivirus. Seems to work very well.

Oh, yeah, and for viruses, i use AVG, and windows firewall, and surf on Google Chrome. I use windows 7.

As long as i don't run any stupid programs on my computer, i seem to come out quite ok. Haven't got a virus in forever.

Hence why I am a FireFox user and abuser.

FireFox > Chrome >Netscpae > I.E. > AOL.

I know how Chrome talks to google to update my search field.

I don't mind that, somehow.

You're paying for it in terms of power/price ratio.

Considering i update my chip every 2 years or so, and a game lasts me maybe a month, my choice would be clear.
