"New" Domino's Pizza

I tried this tonight on a whim, after seeing the commercials promising heartier sauce with 40% more herbs, garlic basted crust, and all new recipes for everything. Offering two pies for $5.99 each, I placed the order for dinner tonight and it seemed great off the bat.

Online order tracking a la UPS tracked my pies as they were made by Mohammad at 5:42 PM. They went in the oven sometimes around 6:15 (which I wonder why the pizzas were sitting out for a half hour -- or even if the pizzas were made when the tracking info said they were.)

Needless to say, the pies eventually arrived, escorted by our Delivery Expert named Kevin at 6:57 (yes, an hour and fifteen minutes later) and were quickly devoured.

And the results?

My 12" pie was ordered with hand-tossed crust, with "new robust tomato sauce," cheese, sliced Italian sausage and green peppers. Mom's pie was a thin crust with the new sauce, cheese, green peppers and onions.

My pie was just like always. Crumbled Italian sausage with green peppers on top of cheese that doesn't stretch with some red sauce on what tasted like Wonderbread. Mom's pie was scantily clad with green peppers and onions on a thin crust. The only notable difference? The thin crust was cut into wedges instead of the squares of yesteryear.

The commercials were really a let down. While the new ordering system was cool, and the new title for pizza delivery guy was changed to "Delivery Expert," everything else seemed the same.

75 minutes for the same pizza that we always got? Unacceptable. But we got coupons for free breadsticks the next order. It's a good thing this order was a grand total of $14.57 otherwise I would've been pretty mad, especially with seven other pizza joints in town to choose from.

Short story... the pizza is the same as it's always been. Terribly consistent, and terribly fake. But it's just like McDonald's... you just crave it, but it's not an acceptable substitute when you want a burger.

When I read your post, this ad was beside it:

(It should be a Papa Johns ad)

Huh, I tried them and noticed a difference. Ours took about 20 - 30 minutes to get here and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's no work of art, but it's good for delivery pizza.

Tried it a with onions and pepperoni on one and mushrooms and pepperoni on the other. It was Ok for the $14 or so dollars I paid for it. I don't remember their old pizza.

Edit: It took only 20 minutes for them to deliver and 45 to make and bake. I was surprised about the delivery speed as it was blizzard conditions outside with -25 degrees (without windchill which made it -35) with 7 inches snow after plowing.

I'm starting to think that not all locations have switched over to the new pizza's yet... because mine was IDENTICAL to the old one.

Yeah over the coarse of 2 weeks I had a pretty mediocre pizza to an edible one. The first time I had Dominoes in about 10 years was a few weeks ago. For a New Years Eve party. We had a supreme and it was alright. Then a week or so later after seeing the 2 for $5.99 deal going we tried the combination I noted in my previous post. I noticed right away the garlic crust. Everything else was slightly better. Since I cannot remember their old pizza I will assume it was bad.

There is an amazing pizza joint that is a 5 minute walk from my house, I go there. It is the best pizza that I have ever had, and I have had some authentic deep dish Chicago pizza, this place is better.

I wish I could, but there is only 2 non-chain pizza joints I can think of in town. One is dine-in only and located on the other side of town. At the other I found a fly in my pizza crust.

I tried it today. It may be because I got a (slightly "fancier", if one can use such a word to describe delivery pizza) different kind than I usually get, and I haven't had Domino's in a while, but I thought it was very good!

I would if half the shoppes, when I'm out and about, weren't made with crap sauce and mafia cheese.

that said, I usually get pizza from BigY or all places, and the pizzaas are always HUGE, with TOMS of toppings, and decent sauce and cheese, and a hand stretched crust for around 9-11 bucks with aq silver coin.

Now THAT is a bargain. I tried the new Domino's. The sauce is better, the crust's butter / parmesan brushed crust is better. But it's still Domino's. Good for a fix, but not much more.

We tried Dominoes [i]again[i] when they were pushing their NY style pizzas. We live about a mile straight down the road from the joint, mailbox at the road with big numbers on it. An hour and a half after ordering we called to find out where it was, they said the driver couldnt find our place. Set him straight, and the pizza arrived cold. Without our sodas, Never again. There are too many very good locally-run establishments offering almost any kind of pizza you could imagine.

Domino's pizza where I live has always been "meh" to me. Nothing to get happy over. If I had to pick a national pizza chain, I'd go with Papa John's. Way better than Domino's IMO. But any day of the week I'll pick a small, local mom-and-pop pizza joint. A few very good New York style pizza places around my neck of the woods. The small pizza joints are almost always better than national food places. Again IMO.

Between the handful of places we have available, Dominios is the only one my wife and I both tolerate, sot it gets ordered the most often. Well, it used to. When the new pizza showed up (I don't watch much TV, so I wasn't aware they had a new one) I wasn't sure what it was. We didn't finish it.

Oh yeah. The Papa John's ad is still there. Funny there's a Papa John's ad on a post about Domino's Pizza. Still can't eat it right now, though. Damn Atkin's diet...

Yeah, there's one of these 5 minutes from work, in downtown Greensboro, and I was pretty impressed with their pie, for a chain joint. However, it IS inconsistent, sometimes it's excellent, sometimes it's just OK.

"Delivery expert". Heh heh, sounds like a punch line.

I haven't had Domino's in a long time but I seem to remember it being pretty good. If you want mediocrity, go to Pizza Pizza. I had a coupon for a free slice so I went there the other day. The staff wasn't interested in serving me and the pizza was meh. Not even as good as frozen!
