New fence day

Found a new way to get to know my neighboors even better. I have a very small back yard that adjoins three other yards. The fence was full of dry rot and about to fall down. We got several bids and picked what we thought was the best. We actually got three seperated bids one for each adjoining yard. We presented them to our nieghboors and talked to each one . We also told them they could contribute if they want.
Nieghboor one is pretty broke and can't contribute but is okay with everything. Neighboor two was insulted, gave us a check and is not speaking to us now even after we told her she didn't have to contribute. We spent about two hours going over everything with neighboor three. The fence is going in today and she is watching an critiqueing every step of the way. She is now trying to change the design of the fence after it is halfway up. Yikes! I'm leaving work early today just to go home and support my poor wife.

You need the Qintar there, he is good at building fences.

I steal stones from the local state parks to build walls instead of fences. Theyre much sturdier, and something about Robert Frost.

Psshhh.. tQ woulda had your neighbors sending you fruit baskets of gratitude AND you'd have the world's second best fence. Never take bids - just call tQ. Lesson learned.

I had to replace my fence about 4 months ago. My fence separates my yard from two neighbors (one on the long part of the fence, and one on a shorter section that's only about 40 feet.

I never asked either neighbor to chip in on the cost. The guy on the long part of the fence never offered anything. The guy on the short part offered to split the cost of that particular section. But I wouldn't take anything from him. I told him I'm very grateful for the offer, but that I'd cover it. (He's in poor health and not doing well financially.) Had the other neighbor offered to pay some of the cost, I'd have gladly accepted; but not a peep out of him...

Asking them to help pay seems kinda tasteless to me. It's your fence. Maybe it's a different sides of the country thing.

I wouldn't have asked for money, but I would have gladly offered some and to build it as well.

Our neighbor recently put up a fence, only he did it along an already constructed brick wall that seperates our yards. He wanted to make his fence higher than the wall, and he talked to my Dad about it, but didnt ask for anything.

Well the fence is up and most of the drama is over. We have actually become better friends with our neighbor to the rear of us. Still very close to one side nieghbor and the other is still sulking. For some reason she wanted some of the dry rot infested wood from the old fence so we gave it to her.

Sounds like you came out as well as you could.

If the fence is on your property, the neighbor can sulk all she wants.

My wife decided to give each of our nieghboors a dozen tulips to thank them for their participation in the fence. Man I love that women. I hope that mends some fences. Pun intended.

Thanks Eric, if any credit is due it goes to my wife. It was her idea.

I have friend who collects abandoned wasp nests. She might be related to your neighbor.:

So the fence didn't add value to their property as well as his? The fence only works from his side? The neighbours will get no benefit because because it's just "his fence"? Perhaps it's more of strange physics thing than a regional one.

Oops, my bad, thought you were looking for or had found a new "acquisitions" fence.

Guess it's my big city Italian roots coming out.
