apparently p.r. is doing it to combat identity theft. i bet folks were selling fake puerto rican birth certificates to illegal immigrants of hispanic descent to allow them to live in the u.s. legally.

i can understand puerto rico wanting to do something like this, although i can also see how it would be a pain in the butt to deal with.

I can almost understand the need.. to combat identity theft and whatnot you need to rethink the way you do things. That part makes sense.
But, what I don't get at all is why this is done so seemingly "all of the sudden"? You're talking only 3-4 months for millions to get it updated. I can see this leading to all sorts of problems. Just doesn't seem to well thought out to me.

It sounds to me like they should knock ten years off your age for the inconvenience

Thanks for the heads-up, Jauqo. My wife's extended family are of Puerto Rican descent via Hawaii (you know, the sugar plantations and all), so I don't think it'll affect most of them, but I'll let them know anyway.

You're more than welcome and the main reason I posted this subject was to inform those who may not know about what is taking place.

And that's the reason I post in the OT forum.

Glad I'm able to help.

I think this thread would have been going in the usual chance to bash Jauqo direction if John Turner hadn't posted in it.

I thought it was because they kept slipping over-aged "ringers" into the Little League World Series....

I was shocked to hear this as well, being half Puerto Rican myself, but my mother was born in Puerto Rico, so this really affects her (along with half of that side of my family living here in the States), not me. The way I found out about it was my supervisor at work brought in a local newspaper with an article in it about this. It makes sense to me, that PR wants to stop the birth certificates being sold illegally. But I agree, it's going to be a pain in the butt.
