If you remember a while back I started a thread on good dogs for apartment living. Well we finally settled on one.
Maggie is a 2 year old Min Pin. She has to be the most mellow quiet and well behaved dog EVAR. She is probably not hiking appropriate but we think she is a great city dog.
We are unsure of her past but she is a rescue. We think she was a puppy mill. The previous owners released her to the humane society because she was a "biter". B.S. Probably more operator error than a problem with the dog.
We are very excited to welcome her to our family. |

Your Min-Pin is adorable, congrats!

A friend brought her a chew stick and she loves it. No house training issues,...we've been on several walks and have been bonding with the doggie. She will sleep in a kennel tonight and we have a bigger kennel for her to stay in when we aren't home. Hopefully that goes well.
We haven't had any problems with barking yet. I'm expecting her to find her voice when she gets used to her new home.
She's really sweet and we love her to death. |

And don't worry about hiking. Unless you're talking several feet of snow or extreme weather, she'll easily keep up with you and can definately do 20 miles a day and probably loves every moment of it. Of course it's a good idea to start slow since you don't know her muscle condition, but for a normal, healthy active dog without any real breed specific limitations (super short legs etc..) keeping up with hiking people is not a problem. And if she isn't barking a lot now, I don't think that will ever be a problem as it's often a stress reaction. My pitbull has barked about twenty times in the year and a half I've had him. Some dogs just aren't very vocal.
If you're unsure about what she does when you're not home, I suggest either asking neighbors to tell you if they ever hear barking or get a voice activated recorder. I got one of those recorders just to make sure my dog doesn't make a lot of noise when I'm not home and it did the job as I don't have to stress about the idea of my dog getting me a warning. I've heard some occasional scratching and snoring, but that's about it. |

I would never dismiss the history of a rescued dog. If she was labeled a "biter," it could go beyond operator error. She may get territorial on you. I'd put her to the test once she aclimates, and invite people in to your home, take her to dog parks, planned social interactions with other people and dogs to see how she responds.
We have rescued several Great Danes. One of the last breeds on earth you would think would bite someone unprovoked. I'll let you guess the rest of the story.

We found out from our downstairs neighbor that she has been barking while we are away,...and I heard her from the end of the balcony when I arrived home from work. As far as the DS neighbor goes,...the mom works when we do and the 18 year old daughter just sits on her ass and doesn't do anything,...she's a nice girl but she needs to get a job,...so I'm not really too concerned about the barking. We hope to move into a house when our lease is up in August.
We keep her in a kennel when she we aren't home and we think she is in there for too long,...so we are going to get a neighbor to come let her out and take her for a walk at some point in time while we are at work. She urinated in the kennel too, so that just reinforces that.
She took went after one of our cats when they were sharing the couch/mommies' lap. I think it was a territory issue so we gave her the firm deep "no" treatment. The cat survived
She's and awesome dog and I think we can work these two little issues out and she'll be a great addition to the family.
I think we are going to put her into some obedience classes and we have playdates at her foster home arranged. |

They actually need to have coats on when it's cold since Min Pins don't have thick fur.
