New Oil Explosion in the Gulf.

Sign in to disble this ad
Details are sketchy at this point, but there has been another explosion on an oil rig in the Gulf. All 13 crew members are accounted for, fortunately, and the Coast Guard is looking at the chances of another leak.

Apparently they were performing maintenance and the rig wasn't actively producing oil or gas.

Yeah I saw that too. Everyone is safe with one injury (I think there were 11 workers) which is thankful and there is no production, which I'm guessing means no chance for 100's of millions of gallons spill. A close call is a close call though and is making an already on edge situation even edgier.

First: no one was seriously hurt.

Second: the platform appears to have been in a maintenance cycle, and no oil appears to have gotten into the Gulf from it.

Hopefully, this will further reinforce the concept of safety FIRST on rigs.

+1

My understanding was that no oil will be released because of this and that safety procedures prevailed, with no serious injuries. Way to go team!

Well, as fate would have it, there is an oil-eating microbe currently devouring the undersea plume from the first leak to the point that scientists are having trouble finding the plume and predict it will be eaten and digested by the microbe with no serious negative impact on the Gulf.

Whodathunkit?

Unfortunately, the Coast Guard has reported a 1-mile long oil slick at the scene of the fire.

I heard that there IS a plume. It's a little over a mile long right now.

Pardon my skepticism but that reeks of oil industry propaganda.

Bioremediation of hydrocarbons is a well documented natural process...but not on the scale you describe. Could you direct me to some reliable reading?
