New tenant complaining about my bass..

I have been in the same apt for the last 5 years, (my wife 10) and had a quiet girl live RIGHT across the hall. I never put my amp loud, and she never said one peep ever.

Now this young kid has just moved in and complains about it. 2 weekends in a row. I never turn it on before 11am and always keep it pretty low. He parties late and sleeps in. I never complained about him filling up my hallways with weed smell, that my daughter gets to smell coming into the hallway.

I could use headphones, but sometimes they get in the way, and I prefer to hear the sound come from my amp, that way I don't have to totally shut off to everything around me.

I wish this guy would loosen up, it's an apartment complex, not a house. I don't get to complain about the stomping above me.

Who is he complaining to? You or the landlord? Have you made your own case with the landlord?

Tell him to live and let live, as he may get a visit from the cops one day, or better still, get shot of him completely by informing the Landlord, you may be doing everyone a favour in the long run, including him ; )

I'd have a friendly talk with him and address the following points:
1) If you have a problem with my playing, talk to me before you go running to the landlord.
2) Point out that he is not an ideal neighbor himself but that his minor indiscretions are tolerated for the sake of a peaceful coexistence.
3) Remind him that a tattling war will benefit no one.

Provided that he has his medical permit, the herb is legal there.

'If' ; )

2 weeks and calling the shots?, tasty doesn't seem to be the one being unreasonable, I think it's coming from the other side ymmv.

As Pookie has posted, have a word first, but for me this guy has already set the bar by going to the Landlord first, you do the same, build your case.

I seriously agree with this. Threats can often be the best medication

I would definatley let him know, he smokes pot and that the landlord would probably be upset about that.

I agree completely. See my previous post for a proposed, civil solution.

The 1st step is to see if you can convince the kid not to be a jerk.

+ 1 Sorry, I've edited but I'm a little behind today, and I completely agree with the initial step you outlined, try and solve it diplomatically first at least, if no reason entails, then your going to have to play the same game, unfortunately.

I told him to let me know if it is too loud, that way I can find a reasonable volume setting, as in all fairness, the walls can be pretty thin and I don't know how far it really carries. So far he hasn't done that.

It IS a MB115 you know...

Best as Pookie has outlined, my thing in this kind of deal is influenced by previous experience of this kind, the cause affected everyone whom lived there, until....

I will say though, if I have an issue, I'll discuss with that person directly, not through other channels as the new tenant has proceeded.

But...he's a young 'un, want's his cake and eat it, we all know what that is, but you can't have -all- of the cake -all- of the time

This strangely sounds like it could be a scene from The Professional.

Tell the dude to come over and jam with you.

Worth a try

It's weird pot smokers usually like muso's? Maybe he's hitting the bong a bit too hard.

But in all seriousness, just have a word and be nice first, unfortunately nice doesn't always cut it, but it's the right thing to do (at first)

Seriously, when I was in college we would get the occasional complaint from our neighbors and I'm sure they were justified. The thing that annoyed me is that we always heard about it a few days later from property management, whereas if they had just come down stairs and talked to us, the problem could have been solved immediately.

A bit of civil face-to-face communication can solve a lot of problems.

+1 Yep, it's not difficult and it's the sensible and considerate way around it, if your considerate enough to find balance, everyone is just fine.

In fairness he's only been there 2 weeks, when I've moved anywhere in the past, I try and 'nip it in the bud' by saying, 'please, anything you want to talk about, just let me know, no problem', it's a respect thing, people like respect, and so they should.

He's a youngster, best give him a while to weigh it up, and sort your differences amicably, noone needs a war on their doorstep so to speak

In my top 5 movies ever.

To Tasty, kudos to you for taking the high (pun intended) road when this little puke decided it was less attractive to act like a co-habitating human being and more like a selfish, self serving prick.

Good luck with this.
