Yea football is in many ways institutionalized human sacrifice; considering their shorter life expectancy, health and mental problems; and the way the nation praises and worships their sacrifice.

That said, I still watch it and love it, even if the Bills haven't been to the Superbowl playoffs since the 90's.

It's nice to know how seriously you take suicide and mental health. If it happens in your family, I'll guess you'll joke about that too.

It's sad, but at the same time it's a product of the system.

I'm honestly surprised it doesn't look worse week in and week out as much money/stress/etc is involved in the NFL.

You don't know a thing about my family.

On the other hand, I once heard a tale about a juvenile male who repeatedly shouted warnings of lupine attacks.

If it you are so protective of your own family, why are you making light of a thread that is dealing with personal tragedies in other families?

I hope you aren't so determined to dump on me that you are willing to walk over others to do it.

I don't think the mental health situation in the nfl is any different than in the rest of the country, just that they're under more of a spotlight because of the money and, ironically, the spotlights they play under.

I'm not being protective so much as stating a fact.

Who is it that I'm walking over, exactly?

Statistically, dentists have a higher rate of suicide than many other professions but you didn't start a thread on that; instead you started a thread about suicide in a profession dominated by African Americans. You also have a prolific history of starting race-related threads.

Am I so far off-base for questioning your underlying motives here? I strongly suspect that you are an anti-dentite.

Wow, derailed at post #2. That has to be a record or something. Pookie, you have yet to contribute anything worthwhile to the discussion. Perhaps you should excuse yourself? It's looking like you may want one of these:

though I'm not quite sure what could have caused it.

More on topic. It's a very sad situation. I saw a special similar to this article on ESPN (the only the on this green earth besides cas that could keep ESPN on any tv near me for over 5 minutes) and it was particularly heart-wrenching. Seeing that the NFL pays these guys millions upon millions of dollars you'd think that they would be more willing to help out players in need. And from the looks of it, there might be quite a few.

Derailed, or straight to the intended point?

While the death of these young men is tragic, they are grown men with friends, families and tremendous financial resources. In short: they had every opportunity to get help for their problems. Instead they took the coward's way out without any regard to the aforementioned friends and family.

I think you have just displayed your own biases pretty clearly in this thread. Both white and black players were mentioned although it was black player who committed suicide last week. I posted it as a sports fan and a concerned human being. You are the one itching to throw race into this thread.

The NFL consists wholly of males. The NFL consists of predominately blacks. That leave us with the *vast* majority of players as black males. Anyone that has had even Psych 101 knows the reluctance of those two groups to seek out any MH tx. There are countless peer reviewed articles out there outlining these very concerns. Merge those groups into one and it becomes even more difficult to engage them in tx.

Combine that with the fact that seeking out MH support or services could be construed as a sign of weakness in a sport laden with testosterone-filled warriors looking for any psychological edge against their opponent.

I'm really not sure where the surprise comes from.

Yep, stress can take down anyone. Doesn't matter if you're making millions or minimum wage. If you don't learn to properly handle the level of stress in your life, it can simply tear you apart.

+1.

Also, I don't always believe that suicide is cowardly. There can be so many issues that culminate in that specific resulting action. It's rarely as simple as "Man up, bro. Quit being such a puss." It not that that difficult to be respectful in the way you approach a topic. And rushing into a thread with your pants down and e-penis at full mast is hardly respectful.

As some one who saw first hand what a suicide does to loved ones, I disagree completely. Killing yourself is taking the easy way out. Life may suck worse than you can imagine, but the alternative is always worse.

If anyone is depressed to the point of suicidal thoughts, by all means, seek professional help or call up some one you trust and talk to them. It's the easiest thing in the world to do physically, it's the psychological part that's rough. Suicide only ever makes your problems go away for you and leaves your loved ones to pick up the pieces.

The only bias I clearly displayed was my belief that you have a tendency to start race-related threads.

You're right that it is rarely as simple as "Man up, bro" but I have my own personal and compelling reasons for my feelings about suicide.

Quite frankly, your posts aren't registering too high on the respect-o-meter either. The pot is calling the kettle cast-iron.

Swear to God........

I know better than to read these Cheese/Pook slapfights.

And then I do it anyway.

And the world gets a little dumber.....

But... But... you did it first . You're right though. I'd be lying if I said I didn't chuckle a bit typing "e-penis" though. It's been way too long since I was able to use that word.
